That way more people can get through. Numbers matter, and if you tie up the phone for 5 minutes, that's 5 or six people who won't get through before the vote.

I just called again, and said:

Hi, my name is (my name) and I'm both a constituent of Senator Levin's and a donor to his campaigns. I'm calling to ask the Senator to support the filibuster. I know you're busy, so I'll leave it at that. Pleas support the filibuster.

Staffer said she would let him know that three of us in my household want Alito filibustered and out.

She said he has not yet stated how he stands on the filibuster. More pressure!

when I called, the staffer said I should call DC because he didn't know if Levin would get the message before the vote...so I did.

Just called again (DC) and Levin has not, according to staff, made a comment about the filibuster yet - 3:25pm.

She's still doing penance in my book from her vote on the Bankruptcy bill cloture, but she's in the "good guy" camp on this.

It took under 1 minute from picking up the phone to a polite, "Thanks for calling, I'll pass that along."

I didn't tie the staffer up with details, just that I am from Michigan, oppose Alito, and if the Senator can't be at peace with voting No on cloture, I would like him to at least consider an abstention.

It was too easy - I wish I had done this last week.

The Washington staffer

was nice and listened but said Levin has made no comment yet.

The Lansing number staffer ended up telling me he was sure Levin was for the filibuster, just not commenting yet. (But he could be wishful thinking too)

I specifically asked whether he would support the filibuster or abstain from the vote - the staffer said that Senator Levin has not indicated what he will do.
