Fuck 'em. We kicked their asses pretty good.

Are we supposed to fall down in praise at the great British culture? LMAO. People who worship asswipes like Prince Charles and Prince Henry. Great culture there. Monarchy. Woohoo.

And the great British sense of history? LMAO. At least the USA has only been bogged down in Iraq once. This is at least the second time for the British.

Find yourself a strong british newsgroup on Usenet. No moderators. And match wits with them. Play by their rules. Or better yet, outwit them if you can. It is an incredible rush and also will reveal a thing or two about how you view yourself as an American compared to how others may see you.

62. The British Laugh At Us The Same Way We Laugh At Them
It's called measuring another culture by your own values. Oh yes, veeeeeery cosmopolitan, indeed.

This is always a very specious angle to take.

As far as having no sense of history or culture, please explain to me how a country based in (attempted) egalitarianism, which is composed nearly entirely of immigrants drawing on the near infinite diversity of their constituent cultures and is only about 230 years old measured from its declaration of independence is in any way similar to a nation with greater than a thousand years of history and descends from and continues to foment a classism through its aristocracy?

Our nation is unique and valuable in that we prove that we can have a society without homogeneity.

Our language should be better observed as American, rather than English. It is as evolving as our society is. It's a language all its own, and should be treated as such. So, my answer to a Brit who claims that we are two nations separated by a common language, my answer would be, "What common language are you referring to? And yes, I ended a sentence with a preposition, and started another one with a conjunction. Most of us think that's just dandy. Do you require more proof? Another thing... why do you bother having a 'z' in your alphabet... if you never use it? Moving on..."

The British can say what they want and laugh at what they want. They can view us as ignorant provincials if they want. They, and the rest of Europe, have only themselves to thank for creating the provincialist traditions which have become inculcated into our culture (at least to hear them speak of it). Their bemusement becomes a bit hollow when it becomes clear that their own actions in this regard are far from noble.

Attempts at satire, sarcasm, irony, exaggeration or self-deprecating humor are just wasted on us. Unless we're given a hint, like that little symbol that comes up on the corner of the t.v. whenever I'm watching the Jon Stewart Show on Comedy Central.

Speak for yourself. I have no problem with my sense of humor. Neither does anyone else I've had the occasion to meet of late.

Never mistake it. People who laugh at the culture (or lack thereof, I suppose) of another people are just insecure about their own.

Just out of curiosity, how is laughing at Americans self-deprecating? Sounds like it's just plain ol' deprecating to me.

71. Oh is THAT what you were going for...
no sense of culture. No common agreement on the fundamental things that identify us as a nation of people. And our language? It's like a petri dish of evolving amoebas the way we tend to verb every noun, and noun every verb.

About the culture and common agreement... looks like you didn't use quite enough exaggeration. You are too close to reality. Satire and exaggeration are best served when they are just a leeeeeeeeeetle farther apart. May I suggest cutting the satire by a quarter cup and increasing the exaggeration to four or five tablespoons (heaping)? Without tonal cues inherent in spoken speech, it can be too subtle. Also, the dash of self-deprecation should probably be increased to a full teaspoon.

"to verb every noun, and noun every verb." Very cute. Clever, even.

Relax, I got what you were going for. I was just deadpanning you waiting to see if you 'went critical'.
Like I said, my sense of humor is fine. It's also just a little sadistic. Sorry.

You were using the defense of humor to mask your obvious attempt to draw out Americans
into a "battle of wits" and demean them. I'm reminded of Colonists who made fun of Native Americans,
calling their language "gibberish" because they couldn't understand it.

We're not the same culture. Shall we go use insider LA wit on Scots and then laugh at them for
not "getting the jokes"?

BTW, I'm English, Scots and Irish, so I have a great deal of affection for the people and their languages -- and one of those (as valid as any other) is American English. (hint, hint)

FOX is Republican HQ.
The infobarons that control it will ceaselessly inflate the importance of the marginalized GOP.
I wonder how long until they use it to issue instructions directly to Republican Saboteurs.

19. They've been obvious morons for years!
I think they have their head up their ass so far, it's coming out of their mouth again and going up their ass a second time.

The very first time I tuned in to Foxnews it was before Bush. At that time I had no knowledge about them nor had I heard any opinions about them.
They had some correspondent at a remote who was saying something (not political) that I thought was totally idiotic. I thought they were morons long before I had any political knowledge of their unfair and biased tilt.

I think it was someone standing in 1" of snow in NYC and saying it was two feet or something like that. They seemed to have a huge propensity for exaggeration and sensationalism. It was like the TV version of National Enquirer.

When I found out my own mother and some siblings watched that shit, I developed a bias about my own family I never had before. I'll leave that unsaid. But, it's sad.

Suggestion: Let's watch Faux News even closer now. While they're bleeding.

39. FOX can do its job only when Democrats are in power.
They were vicious attack dogs against Clinton, and they'll carefully monitor the new, Democratic Congress. That's what a news organization is supposed to do, imho. What bothers me about FOX is the outright lie that they're fair and balanced. They're not. The are the official propaganda outlet of the Republican party. We need a FOX counterpart on the left.

imho ...

I really do believe that Fox News is one reason why we took control. They are nasty, mean and liars. Hannity and O'Reilly bash the Dems and people all the time. People have just proven that they are extremely sick of it all. Thanks Fox. You turned out to be an asset after all!

Their lies spew the malfeasant distortions of elitist zealots with disregard to the harm and confusion they carry.

Buddha says...

The thought manifests as the word;
The word manifests as the deed;
The deed develops into habit;
The habit hardens into character;
So watch the thought and its ways with care,
And let it spring from love
Born of concern for all beings.

FOX SUX. They preach hate and hate America.

Get this straight, asswipes, you have no influence anymore. There is no minority speaker and if you insist on addressing whatever RepubliCON is left as the head of your small band of criminals as such Speaker Pelosi may introduce the Fairness Doctrine and cut whatever is left of your small balls off.

45. Fox still iritates the hell out of me for calling themselves a "News" Channel
I'm not a professional journalist, I was only a college level journalist for just about a year or two. Still even someone with the slightest bit of journalism experience will recognize that what there selling is not news.

The most generous designation I could give them is an Op Ed channel/ All Right wing Op Ed All the Time. They never offer facts, they only offer the personal opinions of the hosts (which is a big, big, no no as a Real Journalist; because its a technique that scews any otherwise balanced story.) Personal Opinions are not News, Personal Opinions are Editorial... I got a serious ass-chewing from my Journalism Porfessor for making that mistake once... it only took once for it to sink in. These guys obviously never had Nancy White for intro to Journalism. I'll never forget that years ago she warned us of the potential dangers of "News Shows" like Hard Copy, and Inside Addition, because they weren't held to the same standard as Real News broadcasts, and there primary motivation was to entertain instead of inform. She said that if we let it, shows like that would replace real news, and public opinion could be very easliy swayed with shows like that.

Obviously she was right.

Those kind of things tend to have a knock-on effect. We may be witnessing the death throes of corporatism throughout the world. Starting with the media seems the obvious priority.
