The images, apparently taken more than three years ago, appear at a sensitive time for the German army which has been confronted with allegations its soldiers abused a Turkish man with German residency in Afghanistan before he was sent to the U.S. prison camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. snip
Top-selling German daily Bild carried a photo on its front page of a soldier dressed in desert fatigues holding a human skull up to the camera under the headline: "Shock photos by German troops".
Inside the paper, photographs showed an unidentified soldier clutching the skull next to his exposed penis and the skull resting on the front wing of a light armoured vehicle. Another showed a group of soldiers posing with their jeep after securing the skull on the vehicle's towing winch like a bonnet mascot.
