Intelligence laundry: To Paris again

Published: Monday October 16, 2006

Senior Member of Congress met with Front Man for Arms Dealer, Sources Say

The Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), has recently held meetings in Paris with a front man working for Iranian arms dealer and Iran-Contra figure Manucher Ghorbanifar, US and foreign intelligence sources tell RAW STORY.

In July 2005, it was reported that Congressmen Hoekstra had travelled to Paris along with Congressman Curt Weldon (R-PA), the No. 2 Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, to meet with Ghorbanifar front man Fereidoun Mahdavi.

.......................

One source says they believe the meeting to be part of a larger campaign to allegedly create and launder falsified intelligence by planting it with key publications and individuals abroad, in hopes that it will seep back into official American channels as though it were legitimate information, collected by allied intelligence organizations. Such a campaign of disinformation, if it exists, would be difficult to track, precisely because it is designed to mask its origins through other channels.

While other sources could not definitely confirm this aspect of the story, they indicated that they were not surprised by the possibility, identifying the "cooking" of pre-war intelligence on Iraq as an earlier example of such a campaign.

of how the Bush Administration has spread 'disinformation' over the years. I woud not hold it above them to use these Congressmen as surrogates to get stories out there and into the Intel pipeline for the epxress purpose os citing it later on as backup.

4. Ghorbanifar? Again?!
If this is confirmed the Repugs are completely out of their minds.
They have learned absolutely nothing since Iran-Contra or they are
absolutely desperate for anti-Iranian propaganda. Possibly both.

It's as if the world just passed through a time warp and it's 1983 again.

Ghorbanifar burned America badly on the Iranian moderates myth.
Nobody who wants even the slightest shred of credibility should go
within a hundred miles of him. He is just too tainted.

22. Do you think the functions behind the scenes of IranContra and BCCI ever
really stopped?

That was the big problem about Clinton refusing to pursue the outstanding matters on IranContra, BCCI, Iraqgate, and CIA drugrunning.

It allowed the basic program to continue and continue to be PROTECTED as Clinton rejected any pursuit of BushInc and his criminal cohorts.

48. Clinton's mistake
was not completely cleaning house and later appointing and keeping hacks on like Louis Freeh. Looking back, there are many things that make me question Clinton's judgement.

These things also tie in to the Pakistani nuclear program and subsequent transfer on nuke material to NK. It's all tied together.

58. The thing is EVERY covert action was TIED to other ones - drugrunning fed
the kitty needed for armsdealing and terrorism, which fed the kitty needed for nuclear proliferation of rogue governments.

And Clinton HAD to know this by 1993 and chose to continue the coverup, which led to business as usual for BushInc.

Republican Task Force Faces Backlash on Bosnia Report

By Greg Noakes
A report published last September by the Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, part of the taxpayer-funded House Republican Research Committee, has ignited a storm of controversy over the actions and scholarship of its authors, protests from Muslims, and the resignations of four of the task force's congressional members. The report, written by Task Force Chief of Staff Vaughn S. Forrest and Director Yossef Bodansky, was entitled "Iran's European Springboard?"

Among its controversial conclusions are charges that: Bosnian President Alija Izetbegovic and his government are bent on creating an Islamic republic in the Balkans as part of an international Islamist conspiracy; Bosnian Muslim forces are killing their own people and foreigners in an attempt to provoke international intervention or provide an excuse for Muslim atrocities against Serbs; Iran is infiltrating Islamist terrorists into Bosnia to prepare for a general Muslim uprising in Western Europe; and this Islamic revolution will be the result of Muslims' innate hatred and distrust of the West and Islam's inherent incompatibility with liberal society.

Although the document contains numerous quotes, none are footnoted and many are not even attributed. Most of the allegations leveled against Bosnia, Iran and various Muslim populations are derived from a very limited range of material, while support for the report's highly unorthodox reading of the shariah, or Islamic law, is based on a selective interpretation of the Qur'an and non-Islamic cultural practices within Muslim societies. The document's use of terminology is often inflammatory. The word "terrorist" appears 27 times in the 14-page report. Finally, Forrest and Bodansky released the report without consulting with the group's congressional members and have allegedly refused to release their documentation and sources to task force members and their staffs.

Equally controversial are the report's findings themselves. According to Forrest and Bodansky, "At the center of the Iranian system in Europe is Bosnia-Herzegovina's President, Alija Izetbegovic, 'a fundamentalist Muslim and a member of the Fida'iyan-e Islam organization,' who is committed to the establishment of an Islamic Republic in Bosnia-Herzegovina."

what a piece of work..as is Bodansky

As usual we are seeing that the neocons are willing to pay "good" money/torture for BS intelligence that fits their own world view. Why the absurd "need" for all those "think tanks" one might ask oneself....

on edit - spelling

TASK FORCE ON TERRORISM & UNCONVENTIONAL WARFARE

U.S. House of Representatives ** Washington, D.C. 20515 ** December 10, 1996

APPROACHING THE NEW CYCLE OF ARAB-ISRAELI FIGHTING
By Yossef Bodansky and Vaughn S. Forrest

Approaching the end of 1996, the Middle East may well be on the verge of a major regional war. Numerous sources in the region report that the supreme leaders -- both civilians and military -- in most Arab states, as well as in Iran and Pakistan are convinced that the present vulnerability of Israel is so great that there is a unique opportunity to, at the very least, begin the process leading to the destruction of Israel. These circumstances are considered to be a historic window of opportunity the Muslim World should not miss. Therefore, these Muslim leaders have finalized numerous strategies and tactical alliances heretofore non-existent in the region. Toward this end, several Arab states, as well as Iran and Pakistan, have been engaged in a frantic military build-up and active preparations in the last few months. Indeed, this crisis is escalating even as all key players continue to reassert their commitment to the US-inspired "Peace Process".

However, the slide to war is the real and dominant dynamics in the Near East because it represents the reaction of the Muslim World to the challenges of modernization -- petrification exacerbated and aggravated by the post-Gulf Crisis regional dynamics, and particularly the intrusion policy of the Clinton Administration toward the Hub of Islam.

In late November 1996, Na'il Mukhaybar, one of the most authoritative Arab commentators on Middle East affairs observed: "The question is no longer: Will the expected and planned war between Israel and Syria ever break out? It is rather: When will the war break out?" This is not a minority opinion. It is also shared by senior officials in the Arab Middle East. For example, in late October, a senior Jordanian diplomat warned that "Syria is preparing for a surprise military attack on Israel in the coming weeks." This assessment was based on high-level contacts between Damascus and Amman, especially between senior officers of both armies, in which the military situation in the region was discussed. In these meetings the Syrians asked for passive and indirect support from the Jordanian military -- for Jordan to hold maneuvers near Israeli border in order to compel IDF to divert forces and hold them there.

Many other Arab and Iranian officials share the same view. There is a commonly shared firm belief among the senior experts serving Middle Eastern governments that the political-strategic dynamics in the Middle East have already reached a deadlock that makes a dramatic breakout inevitable. The strong commitment to such a dramatic breakout among most senior leaders is the key to understanding the present dangers. These leaders see no alternative to a dramatic breakout possible only through cataclysmic violence. The mere revival of the ongoing processes -- be it the peace process on the Arabs' terms or even the return to a region-wide state of war -- will no longer suffice to meet the strategic challenges from Islamic revivalism. Hence, the slide toward the resumption of violence -- ranging from spectacular terrorism to an all-out war -- between the Arabs and Israel. This is a very prudent and reasonable assessment given the overall regionaldynamics over the last few months, particularly if examined in the context of the strategic regional dynamics of the last couple of years. Essentially, in their entirety, the tactical and military developments of recent months reinforce and confirm the earlier strategic posturing. Therefore, these military activities can, and should, be perceived as implementation of earlier grand designs. And this complementary relationship between the strategic and tactical dynamics is the key to the alarmist approach to interpreting the unfolding events.

27. Might that be this Wheaton?
This stuff goes back to the scandals of the 70s... of Watergate and Richard Helms, the CIA director, being convicted by Congress of lying to Congress, of Ted Shackley and Tom Clines and Dick Secord and a group of them being forced into retirement as a result of the scandal over Edmond P. Wilson’s training of Libyan terrorists in conjunction with these guys, and moving C-4 explosives to Libya. They decided way back when, ‘75-’76, during the Pike and Church Committee hearings, that the Congress was their enemy. They felt that the government had betrayed them and that they were the real heroes in this country and that the government became their enemy. In the late 70s, in fact, after Gerry Ford lost the election in ’76 to Jimmy Carter, and then these guys became exposed by Stansfield Turner and crowd for whatever reason... there were different factions involved in all this stuff, and power plays... Ted Shackley and Vernon Walters and Frank Carlucci and Ving West and a group of these guys used to have park-bench meetings in the late 70s in McClean, Virginia so nobody could overhear they conversations. They basically said, "With our expertise at placing dictators in power," I’m almost quoting verbatim one of their comments, "why don’t we treat the United States like the world’s biggest banana republic and take it over?" And the first thing they had to do was to get their man in the White House, and that was George Bush."

Reagan never really was the president. He was the front man. They selected a guy that had charisma, who was popular, and just a good old boy, but they got George Bush in there to actually run the White House. They’d let Ronald Reagan and Nancy out of the closet and let them make a speech and run them up the flagpole and salute them and put them back in the closet while these spooks ran the White House. They made sure that George Bush was the chairman of each of the critical committees involving these covert operations things. One of them was the Vice President’s Task Force On Combating Terrorism. They got Bush in as the head of the vice president’s task force on narcotics, the South Florida Task Force, so that they could place people in DEA and in the Pentagon and in customs to run interference for them in these large-scale international narcotics and movement of narcotics money cases. They got Bush in as the chairman of the committee to deregulate the Savings and Loans in ’83 so they could deregulate the Savings and Loans, so that they would be so loosely structured that they could steal 400, 500 billion dollars of what amounted to the taxpayers’ money out of these Savings and Loans and then bail them out. They got hit twice: they stole the money out of the Savings and Loans, and then they sold the Savings and Loans right back to the same guys, and then the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation - the taxpayers money - paid for bailing out the Savings and Loans that they stole the money from.. and they ran the whole operation, and Bush was the de facto president even before the ‘88 election when he became president.

See, when Harry Truman signed the National Security Act creating the CIA, he specifically stated in that act that they could not have any police powers. And they could not operate domestically in the United States, because he feared a secret police coup. By creeping in a little at a time, that coup has taken place.

This crowd really believes that the unwashed masses are ignorant, that we are people who are not capable of governing ourselves, that we need this elitist group to control the country, and the world -- these guys have expanded. They look at the United States not as a country, not in any kind of patriotic mode now, but they look on it as a state within a world that they control. And that’s this attitude that they have. They’re not unlike any other megalomaniac in the world. They’re nutty as fruitcake, but they’ve got distinguished gray hair, three-piece dark suits and they carry briefcases, and they’ll stand up and make speeches just as articulate as anybody in the world, but they don’t socialize and function outside their own little clique. My experience with them is that they could be certified as criminally insane and put away in a rubber room and have the key thrown away. That’s how dangerous they are. But they’re powerful, and they’re educated. And that makes them twice as dangerous. And that’s basically what’s running the world right now.

44. More on Wheaton in David Corn's Blond Ghost.
(1) David Corn, Blond Ghost: The Shackley and the CIA's Crusades (1994)

snip

Throughout the winter and spring, as Sheehan talked to Wheaton and Jenkins, he had something else on his mind: a two-year-old bombing in Nicaragua. On May 30, 1984, a bomb had exploded at a press conference in La Penca, Nicaragua, held by Eden Pastora, a maverick Contra leader who resisted cooperating with the CIA and the main Contra force. Several people were killed, but not Pastora. Afterward, Tony Avirgan, an American journalist who suffered shrapnel wounds at La Penca, and his wife, Martha Honey, set out to uncover who had plotted the attack. A year later, they produced a book that charged a small group of Americans and Cuban exiles-some with ties to the CIA and the Contras-with planning the murderous assault. One of the persons they fingered was John Hull, a Contra supporter with a spread in northern Costa Rica and a relationship with North and the CIA. Their report noted that some Contra supporters were moonlighting in the drug trade.

Hull sued the couple for libel in Costa Rica. He demanded $1 million. Avirgan and Honey, who lived in San Jose, received death threats. They considered retaliating by filing a lawsuit in the States against individuals in the secret Contra-support network. But they could find no lawyer to take such a difficult case. Eventually Sheehan was recommended to them. They checked him out. The reports were mixed. But he had one undeniable positive attribute: he would accept the case. The couple retained him.

Come late spring of 1986, Sheehan was mixing with spooks in the Washington area, and he was pondering how to craft a lawsuit for Avirgan and Honey. He collected information on the Contra operation. He drew closer to Wheaton, who had a new tale every time they met. Then Sheehan made a pilgrimage to meet the dark angel of the covert crowd: Ed Wilson.

The imprisoned rogue officer made Sheehan's head swim. The essence of Wilson's story, Sheehan claimed, was that the Agency in 1976 had created a highly secretive counter terrorist unit modeled on the PRUs of Vietnam and had run this entity apart from the main bureaucracy. The mission: conduct "wet operations" (spy talk for assassinations). After the election of Jimmy Carter, this group was erased from the books and hidden in private companies, and Shackley was the man in charge of the unit both in and out of government. The program was divided into different components. CIA man William Buckley supposedly had directed one out of Mexico with Quintero and Ricardo Chavez. Another unit was headed by a former Mossad officer. Felix Rodriguez was involved in yet one more in the Mideast. Sheehan took Wilson at his word. "Wilson went into such detail," Sheehan later maintained. "It's not something that's being made up."

There's lots of other great stories about Wheaton on this link, but this one from Corn's book looked particularly juicy.

MEDIA, Pa. (AP) -- The FBI raided the homes of Rep. Curt Weldon's daughter and a close friend Monday as it investigates whether the congressman improperly helped the pair win lobbying and consulting contracts.

Agents searched four locations in the Philadelphia area and two in Jacksonville, Fla., said Debbie Weierman, an FBI spokeswoman in Washington. The congressman's home and his offices were not among the locations searched, she said.

Earlier Monday, Weldon called the investigation politically motivated and called the timing suspect. A Republican locked in a tight re-election bid, he denied wrongdoing and said he gave his daughter no special help.

"What I find ironic, if there is an investigation, is that no one would tell me until three weeks before the election," Weldon said at an appearance in Media. "This incident was 2 1/2 years ago."

Of course, it's all a "Democrat" ploy. :eyes:

Dana Rohrabacher is one of the few outside those states - I think he's definitely a longtime operative for BushInc's oil empire designs.

31. more on McCollum - a nasty piece of work going back a long way
http://www.sptimes.com/News/102200/news_pf/State/Bill_McCollum__Parall.shtml from October 22, 2000

snip

During 10 terms, never facing formidable opposition, McCollum tended to focus more on national and international matters than issues more directly affecting his district. During the 1980s, he focused much of his energy trying to bolster the Contras in Nicaragua and the government of El Salvador. He and his staff frequently flew to Central America.

Serving on the Judiciary and Banking committees, he become an authority on crime and terrorism and laid down a consistently pro-business record often attacked by consumer groups.

The Public Campaign, a campaign finance reform advocacy group, in 1998 awarded him its first "Golden Leash Award," for receiving generous contributions from banking and credit card companies and promoting "special favors for his "cash constituents' at the expense of his real constituents back home."

snip

Early in his career, for instance, McCollum led the charge to prevent the Legal Services Corp., which provides legal help to the poor, from filing class-action lawsuits. But more recently, McCollum quietly fended off efforts by the GOP leadership to eliminate Legal Services funding.

But it turns out McCollum’s statesmanship during the Iran-contra matter -- his advice in 1987 that the prosecutor "pack his bags" -- may have been more a personal issue than originally thought.

North’s notebooks were made public in 1990, and they included a cryptic passage dated March 4, 1985, indicating that National Security Advisor Robert McFarlane briefed members of the House -- including Livingston, Hyde and McCollum -- on efforts to secure up to $50 million for the contras through Saudi Arabia (Adnan Khoshoggi and possibly King Faud) and other countries.

If McFarlane told the congressmen about the back-channel funding scheme, then they should have spoken up about it when the Iran-contra scandal broke a year later. Bob Fletcher, who ran against McCollum in 1990, alleged McCollum had become a co-conspirator by keeping that secret. He asked Walsh to investigate.

But McCollum said the information flow at the meeting went the other way: He and the congressmen told McFarlane and North what they were doing to pass a bill supplying $27 million in humanitarian aid to the contras. McCollum said talk of "third party" funding might have come from Hyde.

38. Luis Posada Carriles is also tied to Iran Contra and McCollum
http://www.blythe.org/nytransfer-subs/2000cov/CANF_Treasurer's_Links_to_Bush,_Posada_Carriles

snip

In June 1976, while George H. W. Bush (the elder) was head of the CIA, a CIA
operative, Cuban expatriate Orlando Bosch, founded and led the Commanders of
United Revolutionary Organizations (CORU). Posada was one of those
"commanders." As revealed later in FBI and CIA documents, CORU was soon
involved in more than 50 bombings and, quite likely, political
assassinations. Venezuelans and U.S. authorities reported that a network of
terrorists carried out a "vast" number of attacks in seven countries against
Cuba and against countries and individuals considered friendly to Cuba. This
reign of terror culminated in October 1976 when a Cubana passenger plane was
blown up after it took off from Barbados headed for Cuba, killing all 73
people aboard, including 57 Cubans.

With overwhelming evidence against them, Posada, Bosch and two Venezuelans
were arrested and held in Venezuela. Military courts in Venezuela acquitted
them, not a surprising development since the CIA in 1967 had transferred
Posada to Venezuela, using him as a leader of terrorist activities against
Cuba in Latin America and the Caribbean. In the Interior Ministry, he ran
the Intelligence and Prevention Services Division (DISIP), which persecuted,
interrogated and tortured Venezuelan citizens. Awaiting retrial, in 1985
Posada walked out of the prison.

According to Posada himself, his guards were bribed with money from Miami.
One of the couriers of such financing was Gaspar Jiménez Escobedo, one of
the terrorists now held in Panama. From Venezuela, Cuban expatriate Félix
Rodríguez, another notorious terrorist, took Posada to El Salvador where
Rodríguez was working with Col. Oliver North in supplying Contras against
the Sandinistas government of Nicaragua. The exposure of that operation led
to the Iran-Contra hearings of 1987. At those hearings before Congress,
Rodríguez was asked about "Ramón Medina." He replied that Medina was an
alias in El Salvador for Posada, a "good friend of mine," an "honorable
man." He testified that he brought Posada to El Salvador from Venezuela,
claiming that Posada "deserved to be free." Not another question was asked
about Posada. Instead Rodríguez was complimented on his role by Rep. Bill
McCollum (R-Fl), one of his questioners.
Rep. Peter Rodino (D-NJ) also told
him that we all appreciate his fighting against communism.

The relationship between these 2 brings up a huge red flag at this particular time. McCollum running for Attorney General in Florida, McCollum's well-known anti-communist anti-Castro fervor, JEB stumping for him quite openly and Carriles recently in the news..

hmmm..

23. Hmm...is Vaughn Forrest connected to John Hull?
That's what Mike Ruppert says, FWIW:

A Witness List for House Hearings on Volume II of the CIA's Inspector General's Report on CIA Drug Trafficking

Expect Closed Door Hearings in June or July, 1998

snip

Vaughn Forrest - Aide to Congressman Bill McCollum, travelling companion to Oliver North aide Rob Owen, friend of Oliver North (mentioned in his diaries) and was present in John Hull's home the day of the La Penca bombing targeting Eden Pastora.

http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ciadrugs/witness_list.html

From the same source:

John Hull - One of the biggest CIA/NSC players during the Contra war. Indicted by Coast Rica for drug smuggling and

Neutrality Act violations Hull escaped on a DEA plane. Close to North, Bush, Quayle and Rob Owen. Reportedly used his ranch in Nicaragua and surrounding areas for drug flights into the U.S.

More from another source on John Hull:

John Floyd Hull was born in Evansville, Indiana. According to Daniel Sheehan, Hull was a CIA contract operative in Costa Rica where he managed 8,000 acres of land along the Nicaraguan border. He has admitted that he received around $10,000 a month from the National Security Council. In return, he helped feed and supply the Contras attacking Nicaragua.

Peter Dale Scott believes that Robert Owen worked "as a cut-out contract between the National Security Council and the Contras." In 1983 Owen introduced John Hull to Oliver North. He also served as liaison to the network funding the Contras.

A Costa Rican security official saw Hull in the company of Amac Galil, the man who took part in the attempted assassination of rogue Contra leader Eden Pastora at a press conference in La Penca. Pastora survived but three journalists, including Linda Frazier, were killed.

snip

John Hull visited Washington in July 1983 to convince Congress that Contra leader Eden Pastora should not be supported, claiming he was being controlled by the Sandinistan government. Pastora and Hull both visited Quayle and his legislative assistant, Robert Owen. Owen arranged for other congressional aides to talk to the visitors too, such as Vaughn Forrest, an administrative assistant for Representative Bill McCollum (R-Florida), and also introduced Hull to Oliver North.

34. From the spartacus link, info on Hull from Parry himself.
7) Robert Parry, Lost History (1999)

For years, contra-connected witnesses had cited Hull's ranch as a cocaine transshipment point for drugs heading to the United States. According to Bromwich's report, the DEA even prepared a research report on the evidence in November 1986. In it, one informant described Colombian cocaine off-loaded at an airstrip on Hull's ranch. The drugs were then concealed in a shipment of frozen shrimp and transported to the United States. The alleged Costa Rican shipper was Frigorificos de Puntarenas, a firm controlled by Cuban-American Luis Rodriguez while employing central figures from the contra network, Moises Nunez and Felipe Vidal.

But Hull remained untouchable, even though five witnesses implicated him during Sen. John Kerry's investigation of contra drug trafficking. The drug suspicions just glanced off the pugnacious farmer, who had cultivated close relationships with the U.S. Embassy and conservative Costa Rican politicians.

In January 1989, however, Costa Rican authorities finally acted. They indicted Hull for drug trafficking, arms smuggling and other crimes. Hull was jailed, a move that outraged some U.S. congressmen. A letter, signed by senior Democrat Lee Hamilton and others, issued a veiled threat to cut off U.S. economic aid if Hull were not released.

Costa Rica complied, freeing Hull pending trial. But Hull didn't wait for his day in court. In July 1989, he hopped a plane, flew to Haiti and then to the United States.

Hull got another break when one of his conservative friends, Roberto Calderon, won the Costa Rican presidency. On Oct. 10, 1990, Calderon informed the U.S. embassy that he could not stop an extradition request for Hull's return, but signaled that he would prefer that the request be rejected. The embassy officials got the message. A cable noted that the new president was "clearly hoping that Hull will not be extradited." The Bush administration fulfilled Calderon's hope by rebuffing Costa Rican extradition requests, effectively killing the case against Hull.

39. Ever hear of McCollum's "Terrorism Caucus"? AIPAC says just ignore.
I know a website called Christian Action for Israel should be taken with a grain of salt for all its hawkish posturing, but I found an interesting nugget buried in this piece:

He also advised getting in touch with the office of Rep. Bill McCollum, also of Florida. Rep. McCollum, he said, had a "Terrorism Caucus" that specialized in research and held seminars. The press secretary also suggested that McCollum's Chief of Staff, Vaughn Forest, could say where things stood vis-a-vis Deutsch's legislation and so on. There was no reply to Jewsweek's letter of inquiry.

The Congressional liasion to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) told Jewsweek that McCollum's "Terrorism Caucus" did do research and did hold seminars, but it wasn't a "real Caucus". Which is to say, it didn't propose or fight for legislation. It was McCollum's pet project, more or less, and had no teeth.

http://christianactionforisrael.org/isreport/dec01/hamas.html

Of course AIPAC says McCollum's Caucus has "no teeth". What would AIPAC (Rhode, Gilon, Franklin, et. al.) possibly have to hide? I don't know, I'll keep digging.

40. MSNBC interview with McCollum - Forrest/Bodansky/Clinton
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5269155 June 2004

snip

MCCOLLUM: Exactly.

And it never was about Monica Lewinsky. It was always about lying under oath in a court of law. Now, having said that, what I just heard Carl say about the legacy of the president otherwise, you remember. You were there and observed some of this later on, Joe, but we had a contract with America. When the Republicans took over the United States House of Representatives in 1994 and 1995, we had to fight like the dickens with the president to get welfare reform.

snip

And when I went on the House Intelligence Committee in 1995, having a very bad intelligence director of the CIA and a very bad situation there that led to a lot of other problems, he didn‘t listen to warnings, for example, of my House Terrorism Task Force, Joe, when we talked in 1993 and 1994 about that.

SCARBOROUGH: Well, Bill, let me play you what Clinton had to say about Saddam and al Qaeda. Listen to this.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

WILLIAM J. CLINTON, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: I think the Iraqis are better off with Saddam gone, if they can have a stable government. There have been more terrorists move into Iraq in the aftermath of the conflict. I still believe, as I always have, that the biggest terrorist threat by far is al Qaeda and the al Qaeda network.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

SCARBOROUGH: Now, Bill McCollum, you warned the Clinton administration about bin Laden and al Qaeda years before 9/11. And I remember specifically actually looking at some of your staff members and said, are these guys paranoid? Like Vaughn Forrest would always talk about possible attacks in New York, in Washington, even talk about Disney world.

But did you ever get the impression back in ‘95, ‘96, ‘97, when you and Vaughn Forrest and other people were rooting this out, that Bill Clinton‘s main objective then was al Qaeda?

MCCOLLUM: No, never I did.

In fact, we were publishing things. Our Task Force on Terrorism was founded in 1989. In 1993 and ‘94, and ‘95, we were publishing reports, very explicit, about Zawahiri, for example, in March of ‘94, who is the second in command in al Qaeda even today, being in Geneva, Switzerland, with money from Iran, setting up sleeper cells in the United States.

(CROSSTALK)

MCCOLLUM: We had a book out by Seffy Bodansky, the executive director of the task force, in 1993 called “Target America,” which described the possibility of flying planes into buildings and so forth.

And Bill Clinton‘s administration in those early years wasn‘t listening to what we had to say. And even when I got on the Intelligence Committee, Joe, in 1995 and ‘96, we had people saying, we can‘t corroborate what you are saying. In fact, of course, most of what we were saying was very right. They just had an enormous intelligence failure and the president of the United States whose people weren‘t listening to the signs that were there.

43. Great find, phoebe! What did they know about 9/11 & when did they know it?
McCollum is desperately spinning here, which belies the truth of Congressional Republican opposition to Clinton's efforts to halt terrorism:

Lets go back to the 90s, when Republicans called Terror a "phony issue"
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=1435686

But in his spin attempts, Scarborough may be revealing more of the truth than McCollum wants to. Look at what he says about his Chief of Staff:

SCARBOROUGH: Now, Bill McCollum, you warned the Clinton administration about bin Laden and al Qaeda years before 9/11. And I remember specifically actually looking at some of your staff members and said, are these guys paranoid? Like Vaughn Forrest would always talk about possible attacks in New York, in Washington, even talk about Disney world.

But did you ever get the impression back in ‘95, ‘96, ‘97, when you and Vaughn Forrest and other people were rooting this out, that Bill Clinton‘s main objective then was al Qaeda?

Is this new news to you like it is to me? I've read the 9/11 Commission Report, Paul Thompson's The Terror Timeline and many other books, and I have yet to see any report of Vaughn Forrest warning the Clinton administration, Congress, or anyone else about possible attacks in New York and Washington (not to mention Disney World) prior to 9/11. Is this just bullshit anti-Clinton posturing, or did Scarborough just let some cat out of the bag? McCollum talked a lot in the interview about his House Task Force on Terrorism, but never addressed this claim directly.

BTW phoebe, great job tying Luis Posada Carriles to this group of criminals. I'm not sure if you've already read this, but if you haven't I'm sure you'll love it:

McLaughlin & Associates in the past..

WASHINGTON, April 8 2005 - Arthur J. Finkelstein, a prominent Republican consultant who has directed a series of hard-edged political campaigns to elect conservatives in the United States and Israel over the last 25 years, said Friday that he had married his male partner in a civil ceremony at his home in Massachusetts.

Mr. Finkelstein, 59, who has made a practice of defeating Democrats by trying to demonize them as liberal, said in a brief interview that he had married his partner of 40 years to ensure that the couple had the same benefits available to married heterosexual couples.

"I believe that visitation rights, health care benefits and other human relationship contracts that are taken for granted by all married people should be available to partners," he said.

Some of Mr. Finkelstein's associates said they were startled to learn that this prominent American conservative had married a man, given his history with the party, especially at a time when many Republican leaders, including President Bush, have campaigned against same-sex marriage and proposed amending the Constitution to ban it. Mr. Finkelstein has been allied over the years with Republicans who have fiercely opposed gay rights measures, including former Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina, and has been the subject of attacks by gay rights activists who have accused him of hypocrisy. He was identified as gay in a Boston Magazine article in 1996.

Finkelstein is a real piece of work..

51. McCollum + Larry Franklin/Pollard spy cases article from 2004 - must read
http://www.arabnews.com/?page=7§ion=0&article=51318&d=11&m=9&y=2004

snip

Paul McNulty is the Virginia district attorney in charge of the Franklin probe. McNulty is a Republican political appointee and, according to various sources, he has also been told to slow down. McNulty, worked in the office of former Congressman Bill McCollum of Florida in the late 1980s.

Also working in McCollum’s office during that same time period was Yossef Bodansky. On Dec. 1, 1985, the Israeli newspaper Davar reported that “the FBI is looking into the possibility that a journalist in the US known as an associate of Israels, may have served as a courier for classified materials delivered to the Israelis. The Israeli newspaper identified the man as Yossef “Seffie” Bodansky, an Israeli living at that time in Baltimore and working as a writer and consultant on military affairs.

According to a fascinating report published in 1986 titled “Spy, Steal and Smuggle: Israel’s Special Relationship with the United States” by Claudia Wright, Bodansky, who was working on a contract with the Pentagon in 1985, underwent an investigation conducted on his activities in the Pentagon by the Defense Investigative Service, the Pentagons own security department and, many of Bodansky’s activities were put on hold. Shortly after this, Jonathan Polllard was arrested for spying on the United States for Israel.

Additionally Davar reported, Bodansky had met Pollard for lunch and Bodansky admitted to the Israeli reporter that “he may have run into Pollard at some party although he had no memory of such a meeting.” According to Wright, a Washington source claimed that he had introduced Pollard to Bodansky and confirmed that they knew each other.

Wright goes on to say that Bodansky’s principal contact at the Pentagon was Harold Rhode who was an adviser on Southwest Asia affairs to the then Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Perle. Rhode has been named in many articles on the current Israeli espionage affair as having traveled to Rome with Larry Franklin to meet with Iranian arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar. Bodansky not only went on to receive additional security clearances, but he joined McCollum’s staff in the late 1980s as the head of the Republican Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare. Though a citizen of Israel, Bodansky held that position until very recently.

District Attorney Paul McNulty might have gotten some interesting insights into Israeli espionage and security clearances while working in close proximity with Bodansky on McCollum’s staff. Many of these political connections and the movement were reminiscent of the experience of the Stephen Bryen Israeli Espionage case of more than 25 years ago.

In 1978, Stephen Bryen, a member of the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was investigated for over a year for having given classified documents to Israelis. The file on Bryen contained over 1000 pages of documents and, through documents obtained with the Freedom of Information Act, the official recommendation was “we urge strongly to complete this important inquiry before an investigative grand jury.”

The Bryen case never went to grand jury due to some deft political maneuvering on the part of his lawyer, Nathan Lewin, and the head of the criminal division of the Justice Department, Philip Heymann. Heymann was the ultimate decision-maker in the Bryen case and, though Heymann kept the investigation moving and had a stiff exchange of letters with Lewin, he finally capitulated to Lewin’s demands and dropped the case.

Not made public at that time was the fact the Lewin and Heymann had been schoolmates at Harvard Law School and later workmates at the US Supreme Court. Additionally, while Heymann and Lewin were writing opposing letters to each other on the Bryen case, they were actually rooming together in Washington, D.C. Normally, a legal official would recuse himself from a case where an intimate friend or associate was involved. That didn’t happen in the Bryen case. Lewin is now representing AIPAC in the current Larry Franklin Israeli spy case.

Watching Ashcroft and McNulty reminds one of the roles played by various individuals in the Bryen case. These individuals include Phillip Heymann and various aides to Heymann.

In the Bryen case, the brakes were applied when Heymann came on the case and ultimately dropped it. The same thing could happen again in the Larry Franklin case, an example of an anticipated contingency. And America will continue to suffer from its intimate incestuous relationship with a foreign country, Israel.

Most recently, McNulty has had a leading role on the prosecution end of many high-profile cases, including American Taliban member John Walker Lindh; Zacarias Moussaoui, the first person to face criminal charges in the Sept. 11 attacks; and convicted spy Robert Hanssen.

From 1995 to 1999, he served with the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, first as Chief Counsel to the Subcommittee on Crime and then as Director of Communications and Chief Counsel to the Committee. As Director of Communications, he directed house Republican media relations for the Clinton impeachment process. McNulty was Counsel to Shaw, Pittman, Potts and Trowbridge from 1993 to 1995, and he served with the Department of Justice from 1990 to 1993 as Deputy Director of the Office of Policy Development and then as Director and Chief Spokesman for the Office of Policy and Communications.

He was Minority Counsel to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime from 1987 to 1990, and from 1985 to 1987 he was Director of Legal Services at the Legal Services Corporation. From 1983 to 1985, he served as Counsel to the U.S. House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct. He is a 1983 graduate of Capital University School of Law.

McNulty has more than 17 years of government experience. He served as chief counsel to the House Subcommittee on Crime during the time the subcommittee was conducting hearings on the federal raid at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. He was chief counsel to House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX). McNulty also has worked for the U.S. Department of Justice as chief spokesman under President George H.W. Bush. He headed the current President Bush's transition team and prepared Senator John Ashcroft for his Senate confirmation hearings as nominee for Attorney General.

"We've known since the mid-eighties, for example, that Iran was training people to fly as kamikazes on commercial planes, as bombs, into civilian targets," Bodansky said. "The question was whether the political leaders of the sponsoring states would give the order to actually do it. From the moment a country starts risking the wrath of the civilized world to start such a training program, it must be serious about it." Bodansky explained that Iran's principal "school" is in Wakilabad, in the northeast part of the country, and is an entity of Iranian intelligence and the Revolutionary Guard. The school, he said, has American-made commercial jets for training its students in techniques of hijacking, sabotage, and flying into civilian targets. While evidence was beginning to accumulate that at least some of the nineteen suspected hijackers were men who had taken flying lessons at schools in Florida, Bodansky indicated that it was still early and the picture incomplete.

"The bottom line is that the attack in New York and Washington was carefully prepared and studied," Bodansky said. "The people who flew into the World Trade Center were highly trained professionals with experience in flying large commercial jets. Flying large aircraft at low altitudes in an urban sky is not a simple thing."

55. From Pollard it goes back to Ledeen, P2 and false flag ops.
The following is taken from The Octopus: Secret Government and the
Death of Danny Casolaro:

One of the ways in which Jimmy Carter may have "bruised the Octopus", as Casolaro says, was through the imposition of a 1979 embargo on the shipment of arms to Iran. Certainly that bruise healed quickly. Octopus familiar Ted Shackley appears, after his alleged retirement from the CIA in 1979, in 1984 negotiations for the shipment of arms to Iran by the Reagan administration. Shackley passed information from Iranians General Manucher Hashemi and Manucher Ghorbanifar, who had held influential positions in the SAVAK secret police under the Shah, and now were close to the Ayatollah Khomeini, to Oliver North and alleged P2 member Michael Ledeen in the White House. The Iranians suggested that arms shipments to "moderates" such as themselves in Iran could do much to prevent the Ayatollah from taking sides with the Soviets, and could speed the release of the American hostages. The billions of dollars of arms shipments began, using Israel, Taiwan, and South Korea as middlemen, as early as 1981, with some of the profits from the Iranian shipments being diverted to help the contra cause in Nicaragua.….

The National Endowment for Democracy has been alleged to be a private intelligence network with the purpose of establishing a fascist, corporatist world state, a theme which also seems to inform the movements of Casolaro's Octopus. The model of this state can be observed in Michael Ledeen's book, Universal Fascism, in which he extolls a fascist state based upon the ideals of Gabriele d'Annunzio, Mussolini's predecessor. Ledeen was connected to P 2, which was in turn connected to the NSC. Reporting directly to North (as well as being a consultant in the Pentagon and State Department) was Michael Ledeen. Ledeen was responsible for obtaining Israeli Mossad spy Jonathan Pollard his job in the Department of the Navy, for establishing a line of Israeli influence
into the NSC, and is known in Italy to have been a member of the P2 (Propaganda Due) Masonic lodge. P2, with a membership believed to include Henry Kissinger and Alexander Haig, is the organization known to have taken over the highest levels of Italian government and responsible during the 70s and 80s for an attempted bankrupting of the Vatican, in an alliance that linked the P2, the KGB, and major networks of drug trade.
The Wall Street Journal detailed a meeting between Alexander Haig, Michael Ledeen, and high ranking P 2 member and number two man in Italian intelligence Francesco Pazienza. Pazienza is said to have been involved in shipments of US arms to Iran arranged by the Reagan administration.

Egypt

In 1979 Edwin Wilson and Theodore Shackley formed EATSCO, the Egyptian American Transport and Services Corporation, which according to some sources obtained an exclusive and highly lucrative Pentagon contract to
ship US arms to Egypt. Wilson also included in the partnership Richard Secord, Thomas Clines, Hussein K. Salem, and Erich von Marbod (at the time Deputy Director of the Defense Security Assistance Agency in the Pentagon... Can you say, "conflict of interest"?). Secord and his partners were indicted in 1983 for $8 million in "billing abuses" to the government. Michael Ledeen, at the time a State Department advisor, stepped in, suggesting to US Attorney E. Lawrence Barcella that the overcharged funds may have been used for the funding of black operations (thus rendering them a "hands off" proposition for prosecution). Secord retired from the Pentagon in 1983, after the EATSCO scandal, then started another company, IRANSCO, with Albert Hakim, in order to ship arms to Iran. (73)

Octopus indeed! Wilson and Shackley tie back to Wheaton, tied to Hull, tied to McCollum and Vaughn Forrest. I think lukery's question below about false flags is a very pertinent question!

57. Speaking of right-wing false flag ops, do you think GWB knows about this?
http://www.washington-report.org/backissues/0495/9504058.htm

Particularly shocking to American readers is Ostrovsky's claim that a right-wing clique within Mossad decided, unbeknownst to then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, to assassinate President George Bush when the president was in Madrid at the end of October 1991 for the opening of Arab-Israeli peace talks. Evidence was to be manufactured implicating the Palestinians. The clique believed that Shamir would have ordered the assassination himself if he hadn't been gagged by "politics" because the American president had frozen U.S. loan guarantees to Israel.

sorry if this is off topic, but Ostrovsky seems key to understanding alleged Israeli false flag operations:

The tragic implication of the U.S. acceptance at face value of the intercepted radio signals rejected by the French and Spaniards is that American intelligence has been "conditioned" to accept as true anything that Israel claims. The subsequent American aerial attack on Tripoli, in which an adopted daughter of Muammar Qaddafi and American airmen were killed, seems to be one of the most obvious and extreme cases of the Israeli tail wagging the American dog.

59. "After all this is the guy who tried to kill my dad."
Can you imagine GWB saying that about Ephraim Halevy or anyone else at Mossad? Nahhh.

Interesting how this may parallel the JFK assassination in a certain way. Many people believe that the assassination of JFK may have started out as a CIA black op targeting Castro that eventually turned against Kennedy. Perhaps the assassination of Yitzhak Shamir began as this plot against GHWB by a right wing clique within the Mossad that turned against Shamir.

So no, this is not really off topic. Same shit, different country.

62. Richard Perle wanted Bryen as his deputy assistant in 1981

April 1981: Richard Perle Wants Stephen Bryen to be his Assistant

Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Perle indicates that he would like Stephen Bryen to be the deputy assistant. This becomes an issue during Perle’s confirmation hearings because Bryen was previously investigated by the FBI for passing classified documents to Zvi Rafiah, an Israeli embassy official in 1978 (see March 1978). Perle and Bryen are described in 1985 as “perhaps the most effective proponents of neoconservative positions on such matters as arms control, technology transfer, and the Middle East.”

47. Those paris meetings can be verified, either way. This is good.
They met with him for something. It doesn't really matter all that much exactly what it was about, at least as far as the political fallout is concerned.

But when we get subpoena power, let the arraignments begin.

Can republicans do anything except create scandals?
