...On spinning the numbers - and the Carol Lin CNN example.
Everyday, under this misadministration, logic gets reinvented. All of a sudden, losing the popular vote and rigging the electoral outcome are a grand victory. Four years later, 51% becomes a mandate (and we all know how reliable the vote totals were, thanks to Blackwell, Diebold et al). All of this is, of course, enabled by the so-called Liberal media (so how much IS the GOP, Rove, etc contributing to the coffers of the media to ensure that the proper message is broadcast?)

Yesterday we have another brilliant example of...I don't know what. Stupidity? Spin? Carol Lin of CNN shows a list of recent polls - spanning a week or two. The older polls have dimson at 39%, the most recent (which was after Foleygate broke) was at 33%. And how does Ms Lin present it? She never really mentions the 33%, but focuses instead on saying clearly that the average is 37%.

So two clear violations here...one is presuming that 37% is a wonderful number (perhaps it IS similar to the grades that dimson got while in school and college - Babs probably beamed when he broke the 20's). The other is utterly ignoring the trend and reporting the spin.

This is so transparent, but they do say that a sucker is born every minute. What is 33% of our current voting age population? That clearly is the number of suckers out there!!!

1. Well
I didnt see the incident in question, but seems to me it is hard to argue with an anchor reporting the high, the low, and then the average.

2. She didn't mention the low, which was the latest. This was
taken over one week, with the most recent the lowest - so there was a trend. She never indicated that.

3. 33+39 divided by 2 = 36 . . . unless there were other polls
factored in, her math is off.

6. She spun the Zogby poll results for Reynolds just
Edited on Sun Oct-08-06 04:07 PM by Texas Explorer
a few minutes ago. She said that "a new poll" has found that Reynolds is down 13%, rather the 15% Zogby is reporting.

Or am I mistaken? I'll go check for the Time/CNN take on the Reynolds matter. Maybe that's what she was referring to?

It's fake news.

There's an article about a university study which concludes that The Daily Show is "as substantive as network news." Like the show's Peabody awards, that seems quite ironic since Jon Stewart insists that he's in the "fake" news business. But reading the article made realize that when Jon says that TDS's news is fake, he's faking.

TDS doesn't fake the news--it simply points out that everybody else does. TDS doesn't say "sectarian violence," it says "Mess-O-Potamia." CNN's Target America coverage was fake news. The war on Christmas--fake news. Bush's allegedly spontaneous meeting with a Katrina victim--fake news. Spinning poll numbers certainly falls into that category.
