"Shoot me and leave the other ones loose"-Amish girl hoped to spare others
Amish schoolgirl hoped to spare others
By MARK SCOLFORO, Associated Press Writer
3 minutes ago

GEORGETOWN, Pa. - Under a cold, steady drizzle, the Amish drove in horse and buggy to a farmland cemetery Friday to bury the fifth of five girls shot to death by an intruder as new details emerged of heroism inside their schoolhouse.

Two of the survivors of the shooting told their parents that 13-year-old Marian Fisher, one of the slain girls, asked to be shot first, apparently hoping the younger girls would be let go, according to Leroy Zook, an Amish dairy farmer.

"Shoot me and leave the other ones loose," Marian has been quoted as saying, Zook said. His daughter, Emma Mae Zook, was the teacher who ran from the schoolhouse to a farm to summon police.

Amish builder David Lapp said Marian's younger sister Barbie, who is recovering from gunshot wounds, provided one of the accounts.

"Her sister remembers it, Barbie," Lapp said.

1. Waiting for the anti religious groupies to show up and
bash the religious values instilled in this young lady who would sacrifice her own life in hope to save others.

Waiting..........It might be a long one.

18. I don't know. What does making random, snarky comments about
"anti-religious groupies", whatever the fuck they're supposed to be, have to do with the topic of THIS THREAD?

23. I'll explain
Since this horrible event happened, many people here were amazed at how the Amish people reacted and some asked. A lot of people said things along the line as the a lot of the Amish are closer to following their Christian beliefs than most other Christians. This brought out people saying that the Amish are not really any more Christian than any others.

There were many posts from certain people who made "snarky" remarks against the Amish and how un-Christian like they are. I believe that is what the poster was referring to. I guess if you would have read all those threads you would have understood.

And there are many Atheists who might be "anti-religion" but not really considered groupies per say. They don't jump into every thread that mentions religion and trashes the believers. Then there are some that do, I would figure that is what the poster was saying.

charging in here and "pre-emptively" using this story as an excuse to make cracks at people on DU. Perhaps the poster in question should have used those threads you mention, the ones I "must not have seen", as the proper format to rebut the "snarky" posts he didn't like, instead of just flailing about randomly in search of an excuse to grind that particular axe.

25. Same Reaction Exactly
I understand what you are saying 100%, and those are my exact same emotions as I read this story. It humbles me almost to the point of tears and strangely they are tears not only of sadness for the victims but gratitude and euphoria for the fact that people like this exist.

it IS possible for an atheist or agnostic to risk their own life to save another.

Your post is bigoted.

12. It certainly is possible and expected.
for someone to have strong values without religion as an adult.

This girl was still very young and obviously taught about sacrificially love from religious values, which according to some people is highly dangerous

31. OF course it is. I would give my life for my grandchildren
Most people would. AFter all, you have lived a long time at that point and if your grandchildren could be saved you would sacrifice yourself for them, wouldn't you?

but occasionally it does the job it is supposed to do. Instill a genuine love of your fellow man in you to the point where you would die for your brother or sister.

22. Greater love hath no human than this, that s/he lay down
their life for a friend-
And it isn't the "religion" that prompts this kind of action- It is the love embodied within the person- regardless of age or affiliation. Sacrifical love is present in animals much of the time- in humans some of the time, but when it is, it reminds us all what it means to give.

This girl knew love and lives with love eternally.

24. she was confident on her destination and held the idea and belief,
sincerely, that Jesus would take her into his arms when she arrived. She was a poised and much loved child to step forward and do that. How many adults would? She is a quiet hero to her beliefs. God bless and hold her close. She is in a good place now.
