Dear Representative Foley

I wanted to let you know the compassion I feel for you. I truly am sorry this is happening and the hell your life must be. As a mother of three boys I cannot help but look at them and feel pity for you.

I realize that sounds strange, but hear me out. If one of my children expressed the desire to grow up and become a politician because he liked the attention these VIPS get, he has a mom and dad who will counsel him about service to others. And if that doesn't get through to him, we'd beg or borrow to get him professional counseling. There is something very sad about a six year old child looking to the future and focusing on power and attention.

My boys are all prepubescent, but when the time comes they'll know with full confidence their sexuality is an important and healthy part of who they are. Their mom and dad don't care if they bring home a daughter-in-law or a son-in-law. We love them for just being them and that includes every aspect of their being. Any homosexual son of mine will receive unconditional love and a solid foundation to become a confident and successful man.

It breaks my heart that you did not get that. It makes me realize how many more there are like you who never had the supportive environment to be true to themselves. I wish your political party weren't so instrumental in perpetuating the homophobia and heterosexism.

I cannot condone what you did and my heart aches even more for the boys and their families. You, as a grown man, knew better. You, within the context of your job and responsibilities, had the appropriate information to get help. I cannot imagine how lonely you must have been...and how much more lonely you are now. You acted abominably and you know it. I can't imagine living in such mental and emotional agony.

I imagine this surprises you Rep. Foley, but this is what is so damned hard about being a bleeding heart liberal. I even care about the likes of you. Is that why conservatives find me so dangerous?
