On September 29th, Senator Patrick Leahy was interviewed by Amy Goodman of Democracy Now.

Goodman asked: "what would be any different if Democrats were in power?"

Senator Leahy responded:

"For one thing, we would have been asking the questions about what's been going on for six years. We've had a rubberstamp congress that automatically has given the President anything he wants, because nobody's asked questions. Nobody's asked the questions that are in the Woodward book that's coming out this weekend, where you find all the mistakes were made because they will acknowledge no mistakes. The Republicans control both the House and the Senate. They will not call hearings. They won't try to find out how did Halliburton walk off with billions of dollars in cost overruns in Iraq. Why did the Bush administration refuse to send the body armor our troops needed in Iraq? Why did they send inferior material?"

Senator Leahy continued:

"And, of course, the two questions that the Congress would not ask, because the Republicans won't allow it, is, why did 9/11 happen on George Bush's watch when he had clear warnings that it was going to happen? Why did they allow it to happen? And secondly, when they had Osama bin Laden cornered, why didn't they get him? Had there been an independent congress, one that could ask questions, these questions would have been asked years ago. We'd be much better off. We would have had the answers to that. I think with those answers, we would not have the fiasco we have in Iraq today, we would have caught Osama bin Laden, Afghanistan would be a more stable place, and the world would be safer."

don't you ever think this goes deeper like how Bush and Bin Laden are totally involved in a business sense and their families have known each other for years, they have OIL in common. Maybe Bin Laden was taking his revenge on Bush??? maybe a stretch of an idea, and we all know how Bush flew the Bin Laden family out on the day of the attack. Geez, they are all bad. And we are nothing but the victims, should I say that in this web? I hate them all for unleashing all this horror on us.

While I was able to warn friends and family of the coming market 'deflation' in 2000 (who could look and not see it coming?) and saved some a significant amount as they moved to bonds and money market, I wasn't the only Cassandra for that one.

I also helped make a friend quite wealthy in the mid-80s by recommending Microsoft and 3Com for a multi-year buy ... but I had no idea he was dropping six figures on my advice. (It would've probably scared me off.) But that was just another KSOTO thing ... like Cisco Systems in the early 90s. Obvious. Also like warning folks off of AtHome in the mid-to-late 90s - an obvious planned bankruptcy. Just KSOTO. :shrug:

Leahy has been an outspoken and stand up guy for a long, long time. He is frequently a guest on VPR taking calls from Vermonters. Some of the things he says, and his candor, are almost shocking in this day and age of careful soundbites. That's one reason Vermonters support him by a clear majority.

The FBI teams, surveillance planes, trained dogs, and hundreds of volunteers from several countries were brought in for a high school girl whose friends say she was drunk and got in a car with some guys she didn't know.Do you think that Hastert or Shimkus or Boehner or Reynolds would have looked at that as just a cute, white son of a judge and his two friends being friendly by offering a ride to the girl? Or would that have been considered overly friendly? Or is it not about protecting or helping our children at all to Republicans, just keeping House and Senate seats.

Leahy is an amazing person. Republicanism can be cured. It just takes a man or a woman to realize that Democracy can not exist without honesty. If they allow the lies of Bush and other Republicans or to stand, they harm Democracy. They harm the US, in a very blatant manner.

Do Republicans not know this, or is their "team" loyalty more important than the honor, integrity, safety and well being of the USA? I would think that any red-blooded American of whatever Party would call for the resignations of Hastert and Shimkus and Boehner and Reynolds and all those others who knew this was happening and said and did nothing. It's time to decide whether being a Republicans means defending the country and its' children, or looking the other way for any lie, any indiscretion or crime committed by anyone in the Republican Party. I pray no child gets abused or molested by some copy catter basing his actions on the "strong moral character and leadership" demonstrated by the Republican Party's attitude of the seriousness of allowing a sexual predator to prey on our children right from America's House.

I don't hate Bush (okay, maybe that's not 100% true) but I do really dislike all those Republicans who just let a lot of self-possessed fanatic right wing hacks obtain power to play a game of Risk with the world. This isn't a game. Besides putting the country in enormous debt and ruining the futures of our children, they've stripped this country of the integrity of being able to say at least we had an honest disagreement and messed up.

I respectfully request that all the Freepers and Trolls and K street lobbyists and those who work for these people - all of you who hang out as ghosts or instigators at DU - to consider the consequences of your actions on this country, our country. We may disagree on small or even large issues, but your guys have really done an incredibly bad job, repeatedly, and it has damaged the country beyond recognition. By propping up the media that reinforces the lies of the Cheney, Rice and Rumsfeld administration, you are no different than any other person in this or another country who wants to harm Americans right here on our soil.

Whether he was "invited" or wheter his PR people asked if he could be on or otherwise.

Is this our strategy to get talking points into the media- to wait around to be "invited?"

I dont accept that excuse-and neither should you.

If Leahy's PR people(that we pay good money for, BTW) are being told that he is "not allowed" or "not invited" to have equal time on network or cable news interview shows, then he needs to say so.

Until he does say this is the case, I'll assume he is not saying this or that on TV simply because he does not want to (And so will swing voters)

That goes for all other DEMS too- if they are being banned, "not invited", turned down, or whatever the excuse of the day is for not speaking out on TV, I need to hear DEMS say that is the case.

To date, the only people I hear saying this excuse are DUers and bloggers- the DEMS who are supposedly being censored, banned, turned down, not-invited, etc to TV interview shows-when are they going to speak up about this and verify that this is what is happening?

I dont think it is happening- if it is, they must be too frightened to SAY it is- which does not impress me either.
