Lieberman slammed over HUGE flip-flop on Iraqi leadership
Edited on Wed Sep-27-06 05:24 AM by NewJeffCT
Just a day after saying we have to get tough with the Iraqi leadership, LIEberman met with Iraqi president Talabani... and followed up his "get tough" idea from Monday by saying "with a friend, you don't essentially put a gun to their head." The Courant has been a pro-Lieberman paper for the most part, too.

Front page of the Hartford Courant here:

From the article:

WASHINGTON -- A day after saying in a major campaign speech that "we must get tougher with the Iraqi political leadership," Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman met Tuesday with Iraq's president and had a pleasant conversation that ended with the two men agreeing progress is being made.

"President Jalal Talabani is committed to working for a unified, democratic Iraq that preserves the rights and promotes the security of all its citizens," the Connecticut Democrat, who is seeking re-election as an independent, said after he and four other senators met privately with Talabani for 45 minutes in the Capitol.

Asked if he followed through on Monday's "get tough" message, Lieberman said, "This is a question of allies working together. With a friend, you don't essentially put a gun to their head."

9. For some reason that statement
made me laugh out loud. I guess it's a nicer way to talk about him than I normally do and it sums him up nicely.

3. Woo hoo! I never thought I'd see that in The Courant.
Thanks, NewJeffCT, for scanning that in. I normally read The Courant online, and I never would have seen that Monday/Tuesday juxtaposition.

K & R!

4. And check out this LIEberman quote, towards the end:
"Are there terrorists in Iraq? Of course there are. That's a reason we went in," he said.

Do you think there's any chance whatsoever that Lieberman actually believes Iraq was a hotbed of terrorism pre-war?

11. I had a letter published on that a few months back...
Lieberman is either intentionally lying or completely divorced from reality... neither is exactly a desirable quality in a senator.

13. Folks, why isn't this thread on the Greatest Page already?
We all deserve some good news, and seeing Lieberman ridiculed like this in a major CT paper is about as good as it gets.

15. Republicans should be asked why they were so anti-Lieberman
in 2000 and 2004, when he was running for VP and President, respectively?

What, they're anti-Semites? Go figure ...

22. it's the speed that's astounding
On Monday, he gave a big speech on getting tough with the Iraqi leadership.

On Tuesday, he had a face-to-face meeting with the president of Iraq and wimps out on getting tough.

That's almost as fast as Bush saying we're addicted to oil & vowing to reduce reliance on Middle Eastern oil, and then right after the speech, some Secretary of Commerce or similar started saying, "well, he didn't really mean it like that..."

21. Classic Lieberman. Talk tough, until you come face to face
He got his macho mojo going Monday. Joe is like an internet bully who threatens to kick everyone's ass...until he has the opportunity to come face to face, then it's all conciliatory and nicey-nice.

Leiberman is a wuss.

23. Isn't that the way of the chickenhawk?
talk tough, send other people to die even when you haven't served yourself.

But, when it comes to actually being tough, then it's cut & run.
