Poll question: Chavez's "devil" comment was...
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called President Bush "the devil" in a speech to the United Nations on Wednesday, making the sign of the cross in a dramatic gesture and accusing him of "talking as if he owned the world."

He's been put on notice; he's a warmonger, no one is applauding him for that, and other countries are wary.

4. I Thought The Comment Was Just Quite Simply Immature And Dumb.
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 09:03 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Regardless of how much of a piece of shit Mr.Bush is, I don't exactly think it to be mature or respectful to stand up in front of the U.N. and say such stupidity. It just comes off as needlessly childish and provocative. It's that sort of behavior as to why I don't trust nor like Chavez. I understand why he has some hatred towards our dumbass leader, but to appear in front of a global panel like the U.N. and use childish smears like 'The Devil' is just in bad taste. I'm just not going to take somebody seriously who engages in such dumbass tactics.

If he wants to show the world that he is a great leader and a respectful man he should not taunt and engage in the back and forth highschool rhetoric. Instead, he should speak in a statesman like manner while keeping to factual points and thoughtful discussion. There is no need for the provocative or childish words nor stooping to Mr.Bush's level. By doing so he loses integrity and I just simply don't trust him, like him or respect him. And this is in no way a defense of shrubby, as lord knows he's a piece of criminal filth. It is the tactics of Mr.Chavez that I do not condone.

So having that said, his remarks were completely inappropriate of a world leader in my opinion.

47. Mocking Bush is a very powerful technique. Don't underestimate it.
The world knows we have a moron or pathological person as our
leader; Chavez was just acknowledging that fact using humor.

Only Americans, spoon-fed by the NeoCon's lapdog press, don't
see the truth of this.

12. Chavez could've done without the rhetoric, but I agree with the spirit of
his words. Bush may be the president of an economic and military superpower, but he has no right to preach to the world about freedom and democracy when he himself is guilty of depriving people of freedom, of spying on his own citizens, and of allowing torture, and he has no right to impose on other countries. Bush is a figurehead of all that is wrong with the US that could be corrected but hasn't.

14. the comment was of marginal importance to an excellent speech on empire
In some ways, the RW media is lucky he said it, because it gives them something to spin (like Rove saying the memo about Bush's ANG service was typed in a font that didn't exist at the time).

But if Chavez hadn't made that comment, the speech would have been totally ignored, and at least the coverage means that people might read the whole speech....which was EXCELLENT!

33. What???
How is selling his oil on the open market driving anybody nuts??? That doesn't even make any sense. His problem is his packing his court and refusing to implement a normal democracy with power transitions. It's stunning to me that the same people who freak out at the very thought of a Bush imperialism have no problem with Chavez running again and again and again. It's stunning to me that the people who go nutso over eminent domain here have no problem with Chavez taking private property whenever he sees fit. It isn't a democracy. It isn't progressive. It certainly isn't liberal. As annoying as it is that we have to go through nuts like Bush over and over again, it's equally annoying that nobody ever learns by experiencing the failures of left wing nuts either.

36. I said, he's also TRADING IT to other Latin American countries
for the products listed which drives BuskCo nuts because they don't control the oil and because it makes Latin America much more independent.

And, the people of Venezuela seem to disagree with your assessment.

And, most leftist governments in Latin America fail because we've made sure they did, not because they are failures or nuts.

40. Like the people of Cuba
and Iraq and the other countries that have elections where everybody votes for the President.

Corpo-fascist economies don't work, but it doesn't follow that the only alternative is total socialism either. They haven't worked anywhere, not just Latin America. And in fact, no economy ever works without tranparency and participation from citizens. The Bushies don't like that, but neither does Chavez and anybody who wasn't blinded by hatred of all things US would see that.

It's late, I'm going to sleep.

44. Think how the world use to look up to America as a bastion of truth.
How sad for America right now and how humiliating for us. The whole world knows this administration’s word is no good. In fact, Bush is probably the first American President to be scorned, looked down upon and viewed with distrust and suspicion by the entire free world.

As Americans it’s our duty to put things right again. It’s our duty to repair our relationship with the world. We deserve better and we’re going to get better. So in November we are going to go to the polls like we never have done before! Bush must be IMPEACHED!!!
