How do I get removed from these forums
A reasonable topic I started was frozen. I cannot continue, in good faith to participate here.

The free advertising I give this site, via the bumper sticker is going to be removed.
I cannot reccomend DU to people I care about anymore when we are not given leeway to duscus the policys here.
I get enough of that from our current President and his cronies, I don't need that here.

To the folks I have engaged over the past few years here, thanks. To those who have passed on godspeed.
To those I have not agreed with, thank you for at least sometimes listening to my opinion.

If this place is to reflect the Democratic party, I would suggest that it starts putting into practice what Democrats, at least in theory, stand for. We live or die by honor. We do best by living by example.

I understand that the mods are volunteers. That gives some leeway, but last I looked, all political activists are volunteers. The cushion from dissent disturbes me.

I read the rules, and cannot accept them.

Thanks for all of the fish!

And to those who will chime in with the "Door, Ass, Bang etc..." To these narrow sycophants I say;

Democracy should be more than simply a façade

3. There are rules... even in a Democracy.
Read the rules of this forum. You apparently did not follow them. If they are too much for you to handle the wonderful part about the internet is the vast array of other places to go and rant.

Anarchy is not the rule of democracy and those who choose not to live by that governing body's rules should either temper their behavior or commentary, or find another place to preside.

Coming from a three term Mod.

12. You didn't have to... there are topics that one cannot broach
for the betterment of the societal whole here on DU. We're not trying to ban every post but there are times when we have to look at how a post will or will not incite others on the board. If participation in a thread gets nasty, the intent of an OP does not always have to be negative for us to consider locking the thread.

There are way too many users here and over 25 million posts that have been looked through to haggle over one locked one.

In your own case if the locking of one thread is more important than the value of the whole of this place, then you have already decided your own personal worth of this place and should move on.

because they chose when to fight or go home as free men.Eventually, they defeated the Romans.

The Romans failed in part because they believed the Salting of Carthage would forever solve the problem.

8. DU is not a democracy
You can't say anything you want here. There is a framework within which discussion is expected to stay, and most people like it that way.

If you want unrestrained, 1st-Amendment, get-it-off-your-chest discussion go to Yahoo! or other similar boards. You will get an idea as to why DU has the rules it does.

If not for this post, I suppose your disappearance would go unnoticed. I won't make a "door, ass" comment, but I will comment on what a drama queen/attention-whore you're being. If you were really so devastated, wouldn't you simply have quit using the forum? Nobody gets their way all the time. Suck it up.

It was your clear intent for this entire thread to be personal. If I were a mod, I'd lock it. You brought attention to yourself, and now you don't want people to draw conclusions from your behavior? Really, grow up.

16. Remove yourself from the forums rather than waiting for the admins
to do it for you.

Simply stop posting. You're unhappy with the rules of DU. DU isn't going to change its rules for you. You want to be removed from the forums.

Really easy solution: stop posting.

14. Be specific about what got your topics frozen.
What rules do you find offensive? Let's talk it out.

Some of the rules were put in place to keep disruptors from Free Republic from turning this place into a mess.

We also know that the MSM and the right wing media watch us. We also know some of bush's thugs read this. We know what we say here can and will be used against us.

So let's see what makes you want to leave DU. It could help us to know.

22. I'll second that motion. I'd like to know more about what you were doing.
I always miss all of the "fun" and would like to know what the problem really is.

I've been around this board a while and rarely find I can't say what I want to say - if I'm smart enough about how I say it.

A couple of tips:
Don't take offense too easily. Too many people are offended by that with which they disagree.
Focus on your ideas rather than on getting people upset. A well thought out controversial idea does not make people mad.

Can you re-state what you said in a manner that IS consistent with DU rules?

Could there be a no holds barred forum? Or are we trying to control the message here too much for that?

23. Goodbye, then.
I read the rules, and cannot accept them.

Then you really need to go, because being here requires that you do just that. This isn't "your" board where you can choose what rules you like and ignore the ones you don't. The site owners started this place up; it's their baby, not yours. They do the hard work, they make the rules.

Instead of griping and pouting that you aren't getting your own way, why not set out to spend some of your own money and time to make your own forum more to your liking? It will take a lot of time, a lot of hard work, and no small amount of your own cash. But YOU can make the rules! And people visiting your forum will have to abide by them.

And that's not being a "narrow syncophant." It never is, when the shoe is on the other foot.

25. you know, over years I've learned that DU is just a forum...
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 11:49 AM by mike_c
...on the "internets." A valued one, and an important one, but in the end, just a message board. That's a useful perspective. Also, it will continue to be here after the current annoyance-- whatever that is-- is over.

It's not worth getting your blood pressure up over. Most of us who've been around for a while have had threads locked or deleted. Sooner or later you'll probably get a polite PM from the admins admonishing you to tone it down or risk being banned. It's just part of the ebb and flow of DU.

Take a break if you need it-- my feeling has always been that if it starts to really piss me off, I need a break, because it's just an internet message board. The dishes piled in the sink or the laundry that needs washing is of greater personal import, in the end.

27. Your post that was locked clearly violated DU TOS
You wanted to publicly debate why others were banned when that is not permitted under the DU rules. You were also told, politely, to make any inquiries about it via email.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=364&topic_id=2150027

As someone who has run his own discussion board, albeit on a miniscule scale compared to this one, I have to agree with DU policy. Such discussions are counter-productive and waste the time and energy of administrators and moderators who have a tough enough job trying to keep a board running smoothly.

There are literally thousands of political discussion boards you can post on. If you can't live with the rules on this one then go somewhere else.
