Lincoln on Bush
"To accept position without question is to allow the president to invade a neighboring nation...whenever he may choose to say he deems it necessary."

OK, so that was Lincoln on Polk after the successful (depending on how define that) Mexican War. It cost him a seat in Congress.

That was before there was a Republican party, though, when Lincoln was a Whig. Funny thing - Lincoln actually kept his principles after becoming a Republican. But then, unlike those who sully the name of his party, he had principles to begin with.

1. his principles as I understand them
included authoring a constitutional amendment to protect slavery during his campaign for the presidency (under an assumed name) which failed to receive needed votes, so after winning he never had to sign it. another copy of it in his own handwriting was found recently in Pennsylvania, I think in a library, and as all the other original copies it was played off as meaningless so it can be disappeared at a latter date.
