My first ever "Letter to the Editor"...
I sent this to the Los Angeles Times because a reader wrote that "the Democrats have been crying over 'spilled milk' for three years" and it was time to move on.

(My letter)

According to a letter to the editor in the August 22 Los Angeles Times, I learned that for the past three years, Democrats have been crying over "spilled milk." That is interesting to me because I am one of those Democrats and I don't remember the subject of "spilled milk" ever being mentioned.

I do know that many of us cry for the over 3,000 servicemen and women who have lost their lives; or the 60,000 of our brave soldiers who have been wounded. I also know that some of us cry for the thousands and thousands of Iraqis who have been slaughtered because our president felt like going to war. We also cry because we see what spending 300 million dollars a day on a war will do to a country.

President Bush said in his recent press conference that we will not be leaving Iraq as long as he is President. He also mentioned that Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11.
So why are we in Iraq, again? How is this making us safer from terrorists? I would love to hear the Republicans' plan because if this is it, we are in deep trouble.

If the reasons mentioned previously are considered "spilled milk", I would like to know what is an adequate reason to cry? How about "spilled blood"? Would that be ok?

2. I like it
I thought it was fact-filled, while still being brief and hard hitting. Counter letters to other LTTEs often get printed.

Take it to them! Don't let them slide by with unfounded talking points. Hit them with truth and hard questions!

5. Wow, right on!
I hope they have the brains to print it. Your points need to be repeated over and over. They should be part of our mantra. Thanks so much for sharing this brilliant letter with us! :yourock:

6. Welcome to the club
My first got printed because I praised their balance on the op-ed pages. It tore my heart out when they dropped all the reasonable columnists before the 2004 election. I don't do many LTTE, but I work on a basic set of rules.
1 It's a paper I read regularly
2 I'm responding to something that is factually challenged or clearly manipulative
3 I don't need more than a few sentences to explain my view and can offer supportive evidence to support my position
4 Avoid using language and phrasing that could be seen as a "talking point"
I think your letter was great because it pulled an emotional hook. It will get to people who don't have all the facts, but have a moral compass that makes them question the goals and results of the invasion of Iraq.

12. That's good
I don't know where you live, but that would get published in my town. That last sentence is a corker, editors love that stuff. Very very good!

16. Outstanding
Hope it gets printed. Fear that it won't, because, you know, blood and that icky stuff about GOP fuck-ups. Not a very popular subject at a lot of big newspapers.

But it's an outstanding letter. Good job.
