Prior to the emergence of blogs, information, analyis, opinions and news was filtered through mainstream media (either tv/radio or print). It was pretty much limited to a small cadre of commentators, who all banged one side or the other of the same drum. ( and yes, there are the "mainstream" blogs out there - but it's more of the same drum banging by the same cadre on the tv/radio/print. )
but the independent bloggers are banging on a different drum. They are not caged in by the rules and conventions of a "news" corporation, and are therefore to free to speak their minds and offer their unfettered views.
this is a threat to controlling the message. Blogs and forums on the internet offer people a place to talk and discuss issues on a wider if not global dais. A few years ago discussions amongst people were limited to the water cooler, local bar or other small gathering places and the only "mainstream outlet" for voicing your opinion took place in a "Letter to the Editor" format or on a call-in radio show - where your letter/call would be screened before being published/aired.
now you are able to discuss issues with just about anyone anywhere. yeah there are "rules" to posting and some posts are deleted/banned - but it's a hellavalot more exposure to a wider range of views
Bloggers also keep stories alive and kicking much longer -this is forcing MSM to "keep up"
By refering to blogs as leftwing/rightwing - the MSM hopes to marginalize them and thereby reduce the influence and credibility. However, as people are hearing more and more about blogs/forums they are checking them out - it has the same effect when a book is banned somewhere, sales go up because people want to read it for themselves and decide whether or not they agree with the controversy. As for myself - I've bought banned books just because they were banned and wanted to make up my own mind about them, and if it weren't for the banning I probably never would have read them in the first place. The same applies to blogs - there are many I've checked out and made up my own mind whether or not to keep visiting/posting to them.
this is the threat to MSM - people are reading, they are talking, they are thinking, they are getting involved as opposed to being content to being spoon fed the "news"
