5. Considering the tabloid fluff and lying by omission
that is parading as "news" these days, that's a GOOD thing.

not passively injesting news programming on TV.

34. well, we bloggers do both
The televised news can have power that the printed journals do not, in that they can critique
the news, remember Walter Cronkite calling it a day on the Vietnam War. I think we need more
objectivity in the televised news but I am nervous about this desire to pre-empt the news
especially leading into the midterms.

35. The op-ed pages critique the news
and do it with much more frequency and depth than anything on TV.

If I turn on my TV on a Sunday morning and see Ronaldinho, my life is much more enriched than if I see some dopey pundit reciting the talking points for the week.

37. agreed but
the fact that the media has been forced to carry water for Bush is sad but what we need is
reform not elimination, I think that once the Democrats win in November, things will shift,
the Dems will win, the GOP can bang the war drum all it pleases, we have now been carrying
the costly, largely ineffective war for 5 years. The Americans do not want an endless
military engagement in the Middle East any more than it did want the Vietnam War to continue.

If not them, it would have been another national network. Of course there are more important things to worry about, especially this particular Sunday, but...Hey, Sergio Garcia shot SEVEN UNDER today!

8. It is a business, not a public service.
Try looking at it rationally.

And most of us watch those shows just so we can raise hell about the 'heads, anyway. I cannot think of a single thing I have ever really learned (as news) from one of those.

11. The problem is these "businesses" used to take
public services like news much more seriously.
It's understandable but it's still sad.

18. Agreed. We were just having this conversation yesterday.
I have a very good friend who got into the news business 50 years ago and stayed until about 7 years ago, working at all levels including his own Network shows.
We hang around every morning on a shady little deck on our Main Street, busily solving the problems of the World.
His take on the de-evolution of the news business is really great.

Do you know that the Lockheed L-1011 became known as the TriStar because Tom Brokaw cannot pronounce the letter "L"?
I learned that yesterday.

Edited on Sat Jul-22-06 11:48 AM by MissWaverly
have a remote with a computer chip, gives us the option of watching news vs another mindless
summer filler like reality vs pie eating beauty queens. And for those who worship the sports
god, why can't these things replace vapid summer evening programming if they are so important
like Monday night football. That way you could cut your grass and do your thing and still have
time to watch your sports.

25. You are funny
but what I mean is a choice not just when but what, I obiviously cannot record This Week if
it's been taken off for the World Cup, it's like dominos, every Sunday it seems the
Sunday talk shows are supplanted by sports BUT I notice that the "fundy" programming continues
unchallenged.

33. yes, but if the news is slanted
how do we get the truth out, those who support the Israeli efforts should be grilled, when
Arabic Tv is showing carbonized bodies of children and asking what killed them -
was it banned weapons (banned by treaty with the UN) and if the US is supplying those weapons; we had better come up to the plate now.

36. Sports pre-empts EVERYTHING. I'm surprised it wasn't on during 9/11
people gotta see their teams :eyes: :puke:

Could you imagine if other tv programs got as much special treatment as sports does? tv would be a mess. I mean, more than it already is. At least you can tell what's on, and when... unless a sports event was scheduled to occur sometime in the hours beforehand...

38. I realize Sports is a big business
and pays the cost of expensive programming, the major stations must be strapped for advertisers
since the big car companies are on the ropes. I understand that, but give us a choice like
watching the news shows from our computers.
