During the 2000 campaign George W Bush was asked who his favorite philosopher was. His answer was Jesus Christ. Since becoming President he has openly spoken of his faith and how important it is to his life.
So, how have the teachings of Jesus guided him?
White House staffers with the title Assistant to the President just got a pay increase. One of the biggest raises went to First Lady Laura Bush’s chief of staff, Anita McBride, who received a $16,000 a year raise to $149,000 a year. The rest of the raises were about $4,200 a year. Assistants to the President now make as much as $165,000 a year. Ironically that average of $4,200 is almost exactly what the minimum wage increase that the Republicans defeated would mean to a person working full time at $5.15 an hour.
20 "The young man saith unto him, All these things <10 commandments> have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?"
21 "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven"
Matthew 19:20,21
Bush's philosophy and political outlook has always been to the benefit of the wealthy. Tax cuts under this Republican administration and legislature have been almost exclusively for the top 5% of incomes and for corporations even if they didn't need or ask for them. Bush has signed tax legislation that have benefited the top 1% by $197 billion and awarded oil companies $21 Billion in tax cuts and royalty waivers. Yet they can't see their way to raise the minimum wage.
"From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked."
Luke 12:48
Bush's 2006 budget included more than $36 billion in cuts to various health care programs including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and aid to children's hospitals. It will also cut Medicare payments by 5%. The much touted prescription drug benefit didn't work out as advertised, actually increasing the cost of many drugs by 5-15%.
1 "He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness."
. . .
8 "Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give."
Mathew 10:1 ... 8
How hypocritical that a man who so openly professes his faith in Jesus should act this way. How ironic that the most outspokenly religious among us seem to be so enamored of his behavior.
