The Huffington Post's Swift Antics

Some readers of HuffingtonPost.com have initiated a new wave of harassing phone calls to Swift Boat veterans who questioned John Kerry's military record in the 2004 campaign -- and the website's proprietors remained ignorant of it for days, despite repeated complaints.

Last Saturday morning, HuffPost, Arianna Huffington's year-old online effort, linked to a story regarding the release of Navy personal information. By Saturday afternoon, two registered "trusted" HuffPost commenters posted the names and personal information of more than a dozen Swift Boat veterans.…

After the contact information was posted on the Huffington Post, the harassing calls increased in frequency. Saturday afternoon Lonsdale received another call, "congratulating" him for "ruining our country." In the early hours of Sunday morning, Van Odell received three calls, he told TAS, at 1:47 a.m., 1:48, and 1:50. A man calmly told him, "I want to know why you lied about John Kerry... Traitors must die. We will get you. You can't get away with this." Then his call descended into cursing, at which point Odell said he hung up on him. Odell received another round of calls around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon. He has turned his phone off so that his six-year-old grandson could not pick up the calls.

This incident is a repeat of similar tactics employed against members of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth during the 2004 election. The same list of names and contact information remains posted on the blog "Democratic Veteran." And since John Kerry recently indicated that he intends to press the case for his military records and against the Swift Boat veterans ahead of the 2008 election, perhaps this is what the Swift Boat veterans can look forward to. Van Odell hopes not. "It happened before during the election," he said yesterday. "I was hoping everyone would realize the election was over. Evidently not."

I usually have the opinion that we shouldn't sink to their level. HOWEVER, if these idiots think they can smear somebody's heroism and ruin the country by starting rumors, they deserve everything they get. If their families are inconvenienced, boo-hoo. Millions of people were more than inconvenienced by them and their lies. It's time that people like that begin to suffer consequences for the things they do. I see a "news" story in an outlet such as the American Specatator (a sinecure posting for right-wing ideologues between think tanks) alleging that known liars are receiving telephone death threats. They don't have tapes of those calls, they don't have phone numbers, yet they claim to know that the calls are coming from readers of The Huffington Post. I'm saying I'd like to see proof of those threats and accusations. What's confusing about that?

Do you have additional information, such as why these folks are complaining to The American Spectator rather than going to the police? Or are you satisfied with making baseless assertions about people being "confused"?

42. I question whether the posters are real

This does nothing to destroy the use of swiftboating as a technique. It is also likely against the law - if so I seriously doubt John Kerry would approve. The American Spectator article bothers me because it pretty strongly implies that Kerry had something to do with this - as he said he will continue to fight this. (I may be really mixed up - but wasn't Lonsdale one of the one that backed down from some comments? If so, this is suspicious.) It does seem what Kerry's team is doing is going through the charges with a fine tooth comb and getting whatever they can from people to disprove them. They said they have a long "interview" with a SBVT who went to the media in 2004 saying the charges weren't true and were political. This type of action hurts the serious effort Kerry's friends are doing. Maybe the SBVT weren't happy with Senator Warner's confirmation that Kerry's Silver Star was kosher.

Another point: The "trusted" posters on that blog have always been mostly anti-Kerry. Many of us from the Kerry group have tried to post - and usually get posts up hours or a day later - we are NOT trusted, while many posters who post SBVT stuff ARE trusted. Given where it's from, previous posts of these "trusted" users should be looked at.
