So what happens now to those that have been demanding more troops in Iraq
There have been quite a few that have said one of our major problems is that we haven't provided adequate numbers of "boots on the ground". That Rumsfeld decided to overrule all his Generals when they asked for more troops. Now we want to do even more with less. I say bring em all home now or at least redeploy to other countries. Don't leave just a few to be slaughtered.

1. In fairness, those who wanted MORE troops on the ground were saying so
to help PREVENT civil war by creating a more stable situation.

Unfortunately, the time has passed where that could be an effective approach. Now, the only solutions are POLITICAL, not military.

2. It's harder to believe we will win now
I don't think we had a strategy for victory against the insurency because Rumsfeld and Bush didn't believe there would be an insurgency. One strategy might have been more troops on the ground - but the time that such a strategy could have worked is past- now we are stuck figuring out the least painful way to lose.
