His cadence never changes, he speaks in cliched clauses, with emphases on predictable syllables, humorless, deadpan, swimming-upstream questioning, almost never knowing how to ask a follow-up which pins a guest down. I used to think Larry King was the softest interview in cable, but this guy...
Years and years ago, in the 1992 campaign, Larry King asked Bush Sr. if he had been involved in the Iran-Contra plot. Bush answered with a monosyllable, "No" and good old Larry said, and I'm virtually quoting: Well, that clears THAT up. Thank you Mr. President." That was it for him as far as I was concerned - and everyone was saying that King was a Democrat. Pretty hard-hitting for the liberal press, eh?
But this guy Blitzer is just ridiculous. Here in Philly, we have a play-by-play announcer for the Phillies, Harry Kalas, who has been doing the games since 1971 or so. Unwittingly, he falls into interesting speech patterns, but you'd expect tat after all these years of basically watching the same thing and not being the color man on the telecast. Blitzer has no excuse - he's just verbally and intellectually lazy.
