Seminary President: Katrina Washed Satan Out Of New Orleans

POSTED: 11:22 am EDT June 12, 2006
UPDATED: 11:35 am EDT June 12, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The president of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary said Hurricane Katrina has cleansed the city of its past hostility toward Christian evangelism.

The Rev. Chuck Kelly spoke Sunday night at the pastors conference preceding this week's annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Greensboro, N.C.

Kelly said New Orleans used to be "a seat of Satan" where evangelists felt oppressed by "the spiritual darkness of that place."

But, he said, "Satan got floated out of the flood," leaving New Orleans open and ready to listen to "the gospel of Jesus Christ."

13. Well, HE got floated out of that city
so he's accurate as far as that goes.

3. Are there any SANE religious leaders left?
People wonder why atheists like me are so untrusting, and disrespectful towards organized religion.

Maybe it's because they only religious people that seem to find their voice, are the hate-filled, backwards thinking, conservative fundamentalists...

6. Remember...always call them extremist right wing clerics.
It's more accurate.

14. Yes, we just are allowed to hear what they have to say. Like
the Reverend Barry Lynn from Americans United for the seperation of Church & State.

15. Yes, but they aren't always making news by being assholes, so
you never hear about them.

I agree with you, though. I read this story last night, and as an atheist with roots in New Orleans, I was flaming angry at everything Christian. It took me a while to calm down, to remember the good Christians I know. One of my friends, a retired preacher, calls these people funDAMNmentalists.

8. A good many Baptist churches were destroyed by Katrina and Rita...
proving, once again, that even Gawd believes the only thing wrong with SOME Baptists is that they weren't held under long enough.
