C'mon Journalists. Let's put "haradin" back in the English dictionary.
I'm hearing all kinds of descriptions for Madam Coulter from harpie to bitch, and it dawns on me that this calls for special treatment and we should resucitate a word that has fallen from the English dictionary: Haradin. I can't define it for you exactly because I can't find my outdated dictionary (you should hold onto the old ones for cases such as this.) but trust me, haradin deserves to be reinvented to deal with people like Coulter, Madam Cheney and Phyllis Schaefly. Maybe more.

8. Yep. That would be the one. I haven't heard it in over ten years
and I've only seen it in a dictionary once. The poor book had its spine broken, it was so old.

12. Actually , I used it . . .
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 08:27 PM by Brigid
When I e-mailed Lou Dobbs in protest to his having Ann Coulter on his show. I called her a "loudmouthed harridan." I was an English major in college, but hadn't heard that word in years. It just came to mind while I was writing that e-mail. That woman needs a shrink. Real bad. x(

13. it's time to bring it back.
I'm guessing it fell out of use during the PC era, but we don't have to worry about that anymore.

4. Harridan-- A woman regarded as scolding and vicious....more
possible from the French haridelle..gaunt woman, old horse, nag.

Problem is-- to refer to the Mann as this would be an insult to true harridans, gaunt women, old horses, and nags throughout history....

17. Knowing their dubious gift for coinage, it'll be "Harridanery"
or something equally awkward and pitiable.

20. true...
I never quite understood exactly how adding a "y" onto the end of "Hitler" all of a sudden made it a clever, dead-on criticism of Hillary Clinton. Sounds more like an adjective to refer to things of a "hitler-y" nature to me. :silly:

16. And amazingly, one who criticizes the relationships and
commitments of others, even though they have committed and had families together, and she appears to be, well, alone. Has that harridan ever been married or shacked up? Do you think she'd shut up if we sent her some new batteries for her vibrator?

22. The old dictionaryies have the best definitions.
Some of my newer dictionaries just define it as "Shrew."

But, yes, I'm sure that's why I didn't find it in the dictionary. Like looking for succinctly under the "Z"s.
