The Zarqawi Thing Is Working Out Well

Warning. The following video is gruesome as hell
http://www.ogrish.com/archives/ansar_al_sunnah_beheads_3_interior_ministry_workers_Jun_07_2006.html. It shows members of Zarqawi's group beheading three Iraqi Shia, who appear to be police. I post it in order to reinforce the point that Zarqawi, while a terrorist responsible for many deaths, is not the driving force in Iraq. In fact, his death will likely lead to more hideous acts of violence because of the leadership void created by his death (and I am not arguing that he should have been spared). Zarqawis understood media manipulation. In the early days of the insurgent war in Iraq he liked to post beheading videos. When he discovered that this horrified the world he changed his tactics--no more public beheading videos (he still cut off heads but did it privately).
When the United States decapitated the Colombian drug cartels in the early 90s, they fragmented and became more difficult to control. And, they became more violent. We saw a similar phenomenon in Algeria with the Armed Islamic Group. You cannot combat an insurgency thru counter terrorism tactics alone. That's a lesson the Bush Administration still has not grasped.
