I can't exaggerate how much I relate to "Not Ready to Make Nice"
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 07:08 PM by BullGooseLoony
I just heard the Dixie Chicks' interview on NPR.

I gotta tell ya...in the run up to the war, I was crazy. I was literally mentally ill. Because I had believed so much that we were the good guys, but this hard-on Bush and the neocons had for Iraq was in no sense justice or necessary. It obliterated my sense of my country and its people.

It affected my work. This was when I was working at Domino's Pizza. I tried not to make a big issue of it, but I did mention to people that I really didn't think that invading Iraq was a good idea.

Then the invasion happened. And, just a couple days later, the discussion got out of hand. One of my co-workers got really angry and called me an "un-American son-of-a-bitch." I'll never forget it.

Well, today, I'm definitely not ready to make nice. I was- we were all- right. We were the patriotic ones. We were the smart ones. We were the just ones.

And fuck the war supporters. Your ignorance, temporary or otherwise, has damned near destroyed our country. And, double-fuck those who still support this war. You're the stupidest, most gullible, un-righteous people this country has ever seen.

Thank you, Dixie Chicks. You're strong, courageous, and right.

1. I remember how many of their fellow country artists bashed the shit...
out of them. I also remember Clear Channel sponsored "book burnings" of Dixie Chicks CD's.
I WILL NOT FORGIVE them for that.

3. Me neither. They're getting their so-called come-uppance now,
though.

They ought to be, and the smarter of them probably are, ashamed.

2. dont you wish the democratic party INC would QUIT making nice
and start calling the republican cabal what it is - liars, thieves, fascists, anti-freedom bigots and financial incompetents.

I'm sure you can think of more. Certainly there are some democrats doing the above, but I am referring to the official party stances.

and finally, NEVER apologize for doing the right thing.

4. It would be nice if we had an opposition party
We don't.

All the polls show that Americans want the dems to oppose the politics of insanity.

Sadly, too many dems have been corporatized with contributions and are merely the pretend opposition

6. I was against attacking Iraq until Collon Powell explained it to me...
and then I saw the looting, and the fact that we weren't even LOOKING for WMDs.

That's when I realized I'd been played for a fool.

And now Powell says he KNEW we'd been subject to a hoax by a cabal in the The White House AND HE KNEW IT!!

It turns out those weapons labs were PORTA-POTTIES and they KNEW IT!

I am NOT fucking ready to MAKE NICE!

These are the signs on the temporary storage trailer on my front lawn:

7. In a way, I really do feel sorry for Powell.
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 07:24 PM by BullGooseLoony
He knows why.

He was so weak.

For a man that probably prides himself on his strength, this was probably the most humiliating thing that ever happened to him.

But, I'm sure that he learned a serious lesson from this. If he ran for President- and this sounds weird- I think I would vote for him.

Just like Kerry.

So many in this country have grown over the past few years. We're building our character back, slowly but surely.

11. Powell just gutted all my patriotism. He soiled the uniform forever
and the United States of America will never be viewed as a golden city on the mountain -never again. This is far worse than Viet Nam and Watergate. I still get depressed sometimes about it and get a bad feeling when I see the flag now.

But I don't think he wanted to, at all. The social and political pressure did him in. He was weak.

23. Powell lost his LAST chance to redeem himself in my eyes
After he resigned, he made an appearance on The Daily Show and failed to redeem himself.

His LAST Chance was January 19, 2004 during the inauguration.

If he had led a column of tanks up Pennsylvania Avenue to return America to its rightful government, THAT would have redeemed him.

24. I believe that acknowledging the truth is the only,
and a sure, redemption.

I think he has done that.

He knew at the time he was doing wrong, but didn't have it in him to stand up to it. He's acknowledged that.

12. I got their cd last week
and I must agree. "Not Ready to Make Nice" should be the Dems' campaign song this year and in '08. I don't normally like anything country western, but that song and several others on the cd are fantastic: "Lubbock or Leave It" and "I Hope" are also great.

17. My husband won't give me my CD back!
we were both skeptical of buying a country and western CD. But we felt as liberals in good standing, we needed to support The Chicks. They've supported us, afterall. And we've been very pleasantly surprised. "Not Ready to Make Nice" is our rallying cry.
I also like "I Hope".
All the music, uh, rocks.
(what are you supposed to say about C&W music?)

30. what do you say about C & W music?
The only thing that comes to mind is "Yee Haw!"

I've lived in Missouri now for 22 years, and still haven't developed a taste for C & W -- classical is more my thing. I had a friend who convinced me to buy a certain C&W cd about 15 years ago, guaranteed I'd love it. Every song on it was about some goddawful thing that happened to them -- their husband left them, their husband beat them, they lost their job, their dog died, and on and on and on. After I listened to it I thought I'd just go and quietly slit my wrists in the corner.

The only other Dixie Chick song I had heard before this cd was the one about Earl, which I loved just cuz I'm so wicked. I think I like this one because it's so self affirming and kick ass. It reminds me of my favorite scene from "Scent of a Woman," where Al Pacino is just finishing up his rant defending his young friend's integrity, and he looks out at the audience at the evil instigators and says (not sure about the names) "... and Bill, and Harry, and Joe... wherever you are out there, f*ck you, too!" Most of this cd seems to be the chicks telling their critics and the administration: "F*CK YOU, TOO." I love it!

13. Wait until they attack Iran.
I thought I went ratshit crazy after 911, Iraq just drove me on further, the election selection sure hasn't helped settle my upset stomach and attacking Iran will just make me completely bonkers.

Good to know the Dixie Chicks will go along with me! Seems a lot of us will.

14. I just bought the CD and I walked to it tonight.
Excellent. I also enjoyed the song that goes something like Goodbye to Old Friends (about the friends who abandoned them when this all happened). The CD is in my car so I don't remember the exact name of the song.

16. Why should we make nice?
Edited on Tue Jun-06-06 08:17 PM by Brigid
We war opposers were mocked, ignored, called unpatriotic, traitors, told to leave the country if we didn't like it, or what have you; while the war hawks were just salivating over invading and occupying a country which had little capacity to fight back and which had nothing to do with 9/11. Their poster boy Georgie, could do no wrong no matter how much evidence of wrongdoing leaked out. Meanwhile, one uncharismatic but capable Democratic candidate lost by the skin of his teeth, and the next was swiftboated out of the race. Both were most likely cheated out of their rightful place in the White House. Too bad we'll probably never know the truth.

Tell me, you freepers, neocons, fundies, and other assorted rightwingers -- are you happy now? Are you really better off with your boy squatting in the White House? If you go overseas, do you brag about being an American? No? Didn't think so. And no, I'm not ready to make nice.

They said that the office of the President deserves respect.

But, just recently, they took it back, and said that they don't believe Bush deserves any respect at all.

They got scared, but got their wits about themselves.

32. Ditto! Can't get that song out of my head. And I'm so effin' tired of
people who tell me to "get over it". Just recently ended an 8-year friendship with someone because I no longer have the patience to hear this allegedly intelligent, well-educated person mindlessly parrot RW talking points instead of thinking for herself.

These crooks and liars stole my country from me and I'm not going to get over it and I'm not ready to make nice.

As the bloody circus that is the Bush Administration goes on and on, I feel more and more angry at those who brought us this disaster. As far as I'm concerned they need to PAY, how I don't know, but they've all got blood on their hands. I can never remember feeling this unforgiving.
