The CNN.com homepage pic angers me.

What? I don't remember Jesus saying that. Let's have a look.

Mathew 19 : 4-6:
4"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' 5and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? 6So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Oh. Well, if Jesus said that, it must be true.

Hey, wait a second, what's that before the passage?

Mathew 19:3-6:
3Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"

Jesus condemned men divorcing their wives for most reasons. Marriage and sexual relations between people of the same gender isn't mentioned here. Thus, Jesus did not say "Marriage = One Man + One Woman" in Matthew 19:4-6.

Let's revisit my favorite Bible passage:

Luke 4: 9-12:
9The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here. 10For it is written:
" 'He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" 12Jesus answered, "It says: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

That's the Devil himself quoting scripture (out of context, of course) for his own ends.

3. People use The Bible for their own benefit, even though that act is
forbidden. Another example of do as I say, not as I do from the phony Christian crowd. A sin is a sin in the eyes of the Lord, so what they're doing is the same as what they are accusing others of doing. With one big difference: they're doing it in the name of the Lord, with the sole purpose of hurting others.

They will all surely burn in hell.

This passage:

...a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife.

It doesn't say anything about the wife leaving her father and mother. Does this mean the wife never leaves her father and mother? Does this mean the man must live with his in-laws? Damn, make this the law of the land and we'll see "marriage" fall into obscurity...real quick!

5. Same thing with 'one man and one woman'...no more divorce and
remarriage for ANY ONE. Now if we could make adultery a felony again, there wouldn't be any Repubs to be elected.

6. Jesus was a Jewish apocalyptic teacher who...
dismissed marriage as absolutely irrevelant giving the coming reversal of fortune in the end times. He neither advocated for or against marriage. Someone needs to read Scripture more closely. Check out the story of the Sadducees attempting to trip him up with the question about the woman with seven husbands.

Matthew 22:23-34

Jesus wasn't talking about the Christian concept of Heaven. He really meant God's Kingdom was coming on earth, consistent with the Jewish apocalypticism of the time. Marriage wouldn't be an institution after the judgment.

At least that's my opinion of the evidence. ;)

10. I interpret "after the judgement" as after enlightenment. God's
Kingdom is on earth for the enlightened few, IMHO. An opinion, because I'm not yet 'there!' I have read so much though, and all religions are similar at their core truths; the content of myth varies greatly, but myths are what people believe to be truth, and often the belief is so strong, they are willing to die for these 'truths'.

Look at the scriptures for the same event in Luke 20: 33-36

('Whose wife is she? for seven had her to wife.')

"The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage: But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage.." Neither can they die anymore; for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection."

My interp: 'that world' is this world, post enlightenment
'resurrection' is realization of man's immortal soul, aka enlightenment

(See also)
John 16: 28, 33

"I came from God and into the world; again I leave the world and return to God." "In the world you shall have many tribulations, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

7. I would expect nothing less from RW retards
I am so sick of people mis-quoting ancient text.

1) they deliberately misquote it
2) it's someone else's word as to what Jesus said anyway
3) much of the unquoted stuff is not quoted because it no longer applies to todays culture - do we pick and choose what we "determine" still applies to todays culture?

The Bible is just another philosophy book in my world, much of it completely outdated IMHO.

8. Maybe we should push for a constitutional amendment banning divorce
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 10:16 AM by NoAmericanTaliban
based on these quotes. And since when was the bible written in English - shouldn't there be another amendment about the bible only being in Hebrew or Latin. And what about stoning people who commit sins - don't you want to get back to the 'real' bible. Maybe we need another admendment stating that anyone committing crimes - has to be forced to smoke a joint. :)

...don't even get me going on this right wing bible hypocrisy.

On another note - a good friend of mine just got divorced - I jokingly told him that for now one he will have to vote GOP - he said he may run as one - I responded by saying that - no, you will need at least two or three divorces in order to run for office under the GOP - say like Newt Gingrich.

9. Wow, you mean Jesus made his points equation-style? Thats new.
I thought that was just something dumbasses did on the internet to prove a lame point they were trying to make.

Let's see if this equation is simple enough for the freeper-minded sheep among us:

Jesus + G.O.P. + Gay Marriage = Bigoted Fascist Jackasses!

16. Exactly! Jesus condemned DIVORCE and adultery, not gays
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 11:13 AM by theHandpuppet
This is substantiated in any number of passages, including the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount, such as these:

Adultery in the Heart
27 "You have heard that it was said to those of old, "You shall not commit adultery.'
28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Marriage Is Sacred and Binding
31 "Furthermore it has been said, "Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'
32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
