In fact the opposite happened. US troops surrendering at Malmady were gunned down by Germans. O'Reilly was trying to dismiss the importance of the Haditha massacre. "It's no biggie; happens in war all the time." Keither Olberman slapped the shit out of O'Reilly on his show tonight.

Olberman went ballistic, and justifiably so, over comments by Bill O'Reilly (twice, on the air, within about 6 months) that identified members of the US Army's 285 Field Artillery (OBS) in Malmady, Belgium as the perpetrators of a execution-style war crime. In fact, 84 members of the 285th Arty in POW status were executed by a German Nazi Panzer (or SS?) unit.
Call in sick if you have to. Watch it. I'm still shaking almost three hours later.

Fox needs to be called on this garbage where they are rewriting their own transcripts and getting full participation from the transcription services they use. They really ARE the 1984 Channel. If they rewrite history, it never happened.

22. My uncle was in the 82nd Airborne...

He died recently. He was a great guy who didn't like to talk about the war, except to say, too many people died who didn't deserve it.

My brothers and I were really interested in WWII as kids. We would always be building models of planes and tanks. And we were always asking our uncle about the war and he would just say he didn't want to talk about it.

When we were in college, he finally told us how he'd gotten shot because their group was carried by the wind (paratroopers) behind enemy lines in France. He got tangled in a tree, and a German soldier shot him. Luckily, the soldier who shot him 'only hit him in the leg'. (The bullets went right through his thigh. He 'only' almost bled to death.) He played dead for hours. When the sun set, he managed to get down out of the tree, and worked his way back through the countryside that was swarming with German infantry to the French resistance.

To say we were awestruck was an understatement. Here was our uncle, the guy who joked at Christmas and would put a big black boot by the fireplace and say "I almost got Santa Claus, but he slipped away!"

He was a hero...

When he died, I printed out his obit for my scrapbook. My mouth dropped open when I read that not only did he have a Purple Heart, he had two. He also had three Bronze Stars. I called my brothers and asked them if they'd known about the Bronze Stars or why he'd received them. None of us knew. He never bragged about himself...

The reason I share this long story is to point out that my uncle, and his fellow soldiers, are the men Bill O'Reilly smears with his lies. I want people to remember that this is not just about ratings, or bloviating talking heads points. O'Reilly has crossed a line into defaming war heroes. Yet is some twisted warped version of the universe that I now find myself living in, I see O'Reilly is held by these right-wing wackos as a 'hero' to them.

Bill O'Reilly is no hero. He is a liar. If my uncle was alive today, I can't even imagine his outrage. So I will be outraged for him.

My uncle was a hero, Mr. O'Reilly. You are no hero. You are nothing...
