Right Wing Talk show hosts admits being wrong about Bush

C&L reader Kevin caught this last night on KABC AM-Los Angeles. Talk Show host Doug McKintyre, has turned on Bush. Will this start to become a trend?

full transcript: http://www.kabc.com/mcintyre/listingsEntry.asp?ID=432586&PT=McIntyre+in+the+Morning

"So, I’m saying today, I was wrong to have voted for George W. Bush. In historic terms, I believe George W. Bush is the worst two-term President in the history of the country. Worse than Grant. I also believe a case can be made that he’s the worst President, period. After five years of carefully watching George W. Bush I’ve reached the conclusion he’s either grossly incompetent, or a hand puppet for a gaggle of detached theorists with their own private view of how the world works.

"Or both. I thought the connection to 9-11 was sketchy at best. But Colin Powell impressed me at the UN, and Tony Blair was in, and after all, he was a Clinton guy, not a Bush guy, so I thought the case had to be strong. I was worried though, because I had read the Wolfowitz paper, “The Project for the New American Century.” It’s been around since ‘92, and it raised alarm bells because it was based on a theory, “Democratizing the Middle East” and I prefer pragmatism over theory. I was worried because Iraq was being justified on a radical new basis, “pre-emptive war.” Any time we do something without historical precedent I get nervous...read on

33. Stacy Taylor in San Diego jumped ship a couple of years ago;
He used to host a talk radio show on a conservative station, though his views tended more libertarian. Now he's a progressive host on KLSD, an Air America affiliate! He says he changed stations because he hates Bush.

Let's hope Stacy was leading a very long parade.

2. So starts the avalanche. No one wants to be the last guy on the bus
That's a given in any journalistic endeavor. These guys want to keep their gigs and they know the party's over.

This will be interesting to watch, to say the least.

18. They can have Zel Miller.
Miller is a psycho, incapable of the kind of reasoning displayed by the man quoted in the OP.

Anyone with a brain, who takes some time to give the matter some objective analysis, will eventually come around.

41. Better metaphor: "No one wants to be the last rat on the sinking ship."
This guy is being totally self-serving; doesn't want to admit he's an idiot: "But Colin Powell impressed me at the UN, and Tony Blair was in, and after all, he was a Clinton guy, not a Bush guy, so I thought the case had to be strong."

What kind of stupid logic is that? He's got his eye on his radio career.

7. Little Misleading To Call Him A RW Radio Host.
Edited on Sat May-06-06 08:35 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
He's a very mild conservative in today's standards. I think what he said was great, but this is no hannity we're talking about here. He supports gay marriage and legalization of marijuana, and is by no means really a RW'er. He's probably more a moderate than anything else. (Was reading wikipedia)

14. "he identifies himself as a Republican"....
thanks...this is what struck me from his wiki info:

"he has been active in addressing issues related to illegal immigration to the US, which he strenuously opposes, and private property rights, which he defends. McIntyre identifies himself as a Republican, though his social views are less conservative than many of his talk radio colleagues (he supports gay marriage and legalizing marijuana, for example)."

...after reading his bio...he actually sounds more like a 'real' republic as opposed to the Conservative Christians that now pose as Republicans...

by the way Wikipedia already has a link to his statement...gotta love Wikipedia...

17. I Know, I Saw That. I Thought It Was Really Cool Too.
It's amazing how quickly things get updated sometimes.

And you're right, he is probably more just genuine type republican, but what I meant was that when I first read your thread I thought it was like some right wing neocon host that finally woke up. He's far more mild than that and the likes of hannity, limbaugh etc... But it is really cool to hear even non liberals starting to wake up and announce the atrocity that is the * presidency.

21. Of all the things Bush & Co. has done --
-- all very well documented, as we all know, on places such as DU -- alot of Republicans, such as this guy in the OP, are now coming out against Bush for one sole reason: illegal immigration.

I didn't read more about him or his rant on Bushco, so I don't know specifically for sure with this guy, but I post on some other discussion boards with rightwingers and many of them are very upset with Bushco for not "doing anything about illegal immigration and for not protecting our borders."

31. He really IS quite conservative
I used to listen to his overnight show on KABC before AAR started here and, while he might support same sex marriage, he never talks about it. He maintains a veneer of impenetrability by talking about the "Founding Fathers" and a purported interest in history so he can pretend to remain above the fray.

But when it comes down to it, he repeats the Swiftboat Vets's lies; he called Elizabeth Edwards--someone removed from the political process itself--fat; he uses Drudge material constantly, etc.

Everyone should really read the whole thing: I listened to it last night when Mr. KABC played it....he still attacks the Democrats as being without ideas and says we are just a party of whiners. So congratulations on him for finally admitting that george sucks. Now he might try listening to what Democrats are actually saying.

25. This type of thing is a three edged sword...
The good:

--It speeds us toward the day when the Bush cabal goes down in flames.

The bad:

--The GOP gets a face-lift, and the partially clueless think it's safe to vote for them again - even though it's essentially the same old greasy, sweaty pig.

The ugly:

--Many of these rats who are now deserting the sinking ship aren't doing so for reasons we'd applaud. Example: some of them object to soaring deficits. If the GOP were to slash human services, education, Medicare, SS and other government services that we value - just to balance the budget - I suspect that many of these weasels would be right back on board. Usually they don't desert because they are coming around to our way of thinking - their reasons for leaving can be every but as disgusting as their reasons for being pukes in the first place.

Part of me would prefer to see the whole rotten bunch of enablers (primarily media types and pols who have served to prop the evil up), ride this all the way down the trash chute so they can be thoroughly discredited, and we can be rid of them for generations.

Katrina, Harriet Myers, The Dubai Port Deal, skyrocketing gas prices, shrinking wages for working people, staggering debt, astronomical foreign debt, outsourcing, open borders, contempt for the opinion of the American people, the war on science, media manipulation, faith based initives, a cavalier attitude toward fundamental freedoms-- this President has run the most arrogant and out-of-touch administration in my lifetime, perhaps, in any American’s lifetime.

Edited on Sun May-07-06 04:10 AM by Tactical Progressive
Hardline Repubs who turn against Bush aren't doing it because he isn't more progressive.

They didn't turn because his tax cuts are adding three trillion dollars to the debt.
They didn't turn because his intentional negligence on national security resulted in 9/11.
They didn't turn because he lied and lied and lied us into an unjust and failing war.
They didn't turn because he outed CIA counter-WMD operations for petty political retribution.
They didn't turn because he turned America into the world's premier torture-rationalizing country.
They didn't turn because he started illegally violating the privacy rights of Americans.

They turn by-and-large because he isn't 'fiscally conservative' enough, which is right-wing code for not shredding the social safety net to pay for his illegal wars and tax cuts.

I don't know about this guy in particular - I'm referring to what a majority of right-wing discontent towards Bush seems to be based on. They're upset because he isn't a big enough asshole.

So think twice about throwing kudos around to these reprobates as if they're finally seeing the world they way you do. They aren't.
