7. Actually, we went over this in international politics class...`
(when it gets deleted, the freak posted about how Mexico treats its illegal immigrants)

Now, the reason Mexico has such tough immigration laws is simply because the Mexican government can't afford any free riders. The government's next to bankrupt in Mexico, so it has to have such tough laws. (also, never mind the fact that Mexico's government isn't run by the corporations, which have a HUGE investment in making sure there's a class with no rights for them to screw over a barrel)

Now, argue it all we want, but we can AFFORD illegal immigrants in our country; and, also, the corporation point helps a lot.

8. Farm workers.
If (as so many of the ditto heads want) deported every "illegal" .... I want to see all the ditto heads out in the field picking produce for the same wage.

Put up or shut up.

11. I believe the argument is
that farm work would demand higher wages if the labor pool was tightened.

10. I beg to differ
Many low income Americans are losing ground because corporate America found cheaper labor with illegals. These Americans are often far from bigots - but you can't blame them for seeing business and illegals both as taking food off their table.

17. Exactly!
The message such as we see in the OP is all well and good when it doesn't affect THEM. Let's see THEM lose their jobs only to be replaced by lower-paid illegals. You'd see a total 180, believe me.

Question: Why am I a bigot by saying our immigration system is flawed and must be fixed?

2. what's so bad about cleaning to make a living?
I don't understand some of this 'elitist' attitude here about how some jobs are so 'beneath' certain people.

I may be misunderstanding you, and if so, I'm sorry.

I know people that do stuff like that to pay the bills, and frankly, they're better people generally than some shifty-eyed cheating 'successful' suits.

There are no small jobs, just small people.

I've cleaned houses and pools and stuff that like that there.

I liked it!

I'm mean that people the like those against the protesters are the types that would NEVER do the jobs like that.

14. the jobs in question are not just the cleaning jobs-- these are skilled
Edited on Mon May-01-06 02:24 PM by Kashka-Kat
trades like roofing, painting, carpentry & formerly well paying unionized jobs.
Its same problem as "outsourcing" except the cheap labor has come here.

I take it some of y'all don't have relatives/ friends who are being displaced by this type of economic shift?

I do believe we are seeing some class divisions here on the good ole d.u.

My question to you is how do you keep these working class folks on our side... lumping them (us?) all into the rascist camp aint gonna do it.

Greetings from Rust Belt USA!

15. And exactly what are those people like? Maybe they are just
very anti-ILLEGAL immigrant but vote Democrat. And how do you know what they do for a living, what they are willing (or not willing) to do. They have a right to an opinion just like you do.

Lots of name calling here. But it's always okay when certain 'special' people do it.

9. We want servants ...
... that is us -- white, suburban and gentrified urban liberals. We need the Mexican and Salvadorans to clean our bathrooms for us because we don't want to do that work ... AND we get to feel compassionate about paying an 'undocumented' worker a minimum wage without benefits, too!

Oh, our bleeding hearts!

We are so good to be letting the governing plutocrats in Mexicao kick their own people out of that country so that their poor can come up here and clean our bathrooms and cut-up our chickens.

We should be marching for the "rights" of illegal immigrants so that Tyson and Perdue and Wal-Mart can make even bigger profits?

:sarcasm:

Sheesh ... this is the biggest bait and switch corporate America has ever pulled on working class people ... and way too many progressives are falling for it.

I live in Arkansas and I had several relatives that worked those Tyson jobs "American's won't work". Yeah. They're shitty jobs. And at the time, they paid accordingly for their shittyness...But not anymore...

I can't believe how many DU'ers are on the side of the corporatists and the corrupt Mexican government. Let's all race to the bottom!

18. They DO take the jobs that we WONT do.
Who will work for sub-poverty wages doing dirty and hard work?
I live in San Diego and see the demographics. Illegals are not taking good/big-money jobs away from starving Americans.
I dont and cant see Americans working for $5.00 an hour in the fields of North County or the San Joaquin Valley.
Give them Green cards and allow them to do these jobs. It'll help them, businesses and consequently, the consumer.
I've heard arguments here on DU about how Americans will do those dirty and low-paying jobs. Not many will, IMHO. Unless wages go up, benefits are offered and working conditions are improved. All that will drive up costs and the shit you buy at the store will cost you more.

Go ahead! Flame away!

21. Those aren't the only jobs being affected.
Read Kashka-Ka's post. And check out this link:

Were not simply talking about people picking lettuce on a farm or someone employed to clean a bathroom. We are also talking about factory jobs. Lots of them.

19. these people are brave
They are standing up and expressing an unpopular opinion in a totally hostile environment. Good for them.

How do you know they are "anti-immigration?" All I see is a sign that states that illegals should go home. And they should go home, and if they want to come back to America, follow legal procedures like everyone else. Despite what the corporatist crowd says, criminals don't make good residents/citizens.
