Halloween and "What her costume reveals"
What her costume reveals…

By Margot Carmichael Lester

You may not put a lot of thought into what you wear out on Halloween, but — trust me here — the ladies do. We’re super-aware of every subtle meaning a dude might divine from our duds. In other words, we don’t wear anything that sends an unintentional message!

To make sure your radar’s tuned to the right frequency, we asked a team of experts for opinions on this year’s hottest costumes for women. Read on for some surprising insights!

Our expert panel:
Joe Procopio, Chapel Hill, NC-based social commentator and founder of IntrepidMedia.com
Houman Salem, CEO of Temple City, CA-based Forplay, one of the largest Halloween costume distributors in the world
Geri Spencer, Paris-based film costume designer
Naughty Nurse
Procopio: She gets us guys. She’s tapped into that dark place that we men have that roughly resembles what women call emotion. This is the fuel for those fantasies of ours you see on The Man Show, Blink-182 album covers, and Jackass.
Salem: A girl in a naughty nurse costume is a girl who loves a guy in need of saving. But watch out! She may have multiple patients, since anyone with a broken heart or a broken spirit is likely to get her attention. You might have to stay needier than the next guy at all times.

Is anyone else having a hard time with the fact that a woman wrote this?

I meant to discuss this before, but this seemed the perfect opportunity to do so.
I recently happened upon a store window that featured a few women's "costumes." One that stood out for me, as I hadn't seen it "sexualized" in prior years (like the sexy witch, nurse, etc.).

A Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz costume--complete with thigh high white leggings, red sparkly platform shoes and teeny, tiny (very short)blue checked skirt. :eyes:

1. I'm having a hard time with the fact that I can't punch Geri Spencer.
Worst comments in the bunch, especially about the Clinton costume.

2. LOL--I think G. Spencer has the "issues."
Quote:
Pirate Wench
Spencer: The message is clear as the Caribbean: Wenches are all about lots of wild, raunchy, uninhibited fun. Swearin’, rum-swillin’, rollickin’ good times. But don’t let that fool you. This woman is absolutely in control of whatever situation she finds herself in.

Hillary Clinton
Spencer: The woman who chooses this costume might have some serious power or martyr issues, and she may take secret pleasure in grinding men under the heels of her spotless Ferragamo pumps.

Apparently this person thinks higher of a "pirate wench" than a woman in a position of authority. :eyes: What's wrong with that picture?

3. I think what they are trying to nicely say
is that the only choices for women's costumes that they can think of are "sluts" or "bitches."

How creative. And charming.

Sadly, it doesn't even surprise me anymore that this was written by a woman. From the writing, it's clear the most empowering thing they can think of for a woman to be is a scantily dressed drunken toy for men. :(

4. Take a look at the companion piece
Full of the lovable lout stereotype. Gosh, the women I know just can't wait to find one of these dime novel heroes.

Curiously, there is no 'decoding' of a man who chooses a Romney or Obama costume.

Devil

Salem: This is a guy who has great confidence, and he’s not afraid to talk to any girl. He’s the one who makes the nurses naughty. He’s likely to be hot and hanging out with other hot friends—like Casanova and Dracula.
Spencer: Definitely a bit of reverse psychology going on here. His message—I’m really into sin. He wants you to believe he’s a devil, and he’s truly desperate to believe he’s a devil, but in truth, he probably doesn’t live up to the costume!

Spider-Man

Salem: He may not be Hollywood material looks-wise and is most likely a little bit shy, but he’s a great romantic. He’s sensitive, fun to be around, and flexible!
Spencer: Spidey is the quintessential anti-hero-hero. Sure, he rescues kittens and staunchly defies the forces of evil on behalf of all mankind, but underneath that body-hugging suit, he’s a seething mass of dark, twisted moral conflict. If you like mystery and a challenge, he’s your man.

Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean

Salem: This guy is the life of the party. He will order the beers but will be long gone or asleep in a trench when it’s time to pay.
Spencer: Any guy who wants to channel Johnny Depp is already headed in the right direction. Jack is a scoundrel with a heart of gold (not to mention teeth). Fun, sexy, spontaneous, irreverent and ripe for being rescued from his wicked ways.

5. UGH!!!
"it might mean the guy’s totally into CGI ultra-violence, which is somewhat scary, but on the other hand ... he’s probably smokin’."

6. I wonder what they would infer from my costume.
Edited on Sun Oct-21-07 07:10 PM by AspieGrrl
I'm dressing up as Shane from the L Word.

Not "scary", not "sexualized" either - just plain fangirl. :-)

Seriously though, why do they have to read sexual meaning into everything? I was Alex from Flashdance last year - obviously more revealing than what I normally wear. So what?

7. oh good grief
Have the ever considered that my costume might just say "this is what I could find in my size that looked half decent" or "I thought this would be fun". I'm having a hard time believing there is really any deep meaning in a fucking Halloween costume.

8. I used to wear a sexy nun outfit and carry a big ruler
That'd probably get a "no comment" from the stupid, boring gits who wrote this piece.
