61. You're missing the point, gk.
You HAVE to be smart in order to realize that using a Mac is so easy that it makes worlds more sense than using anything else.

Now THAT takes intelligence!

Unless, of course, you're one of those people who prides yourself on having built your own home telephony system, rather than having to depend like "stupid" people on that telephone that you just pick up and punch the buttons and you can make your call.

I don't think "Macs are better" is any big secret by now.
Years ago, yes. Now, you'd really have to be out of the loop not to know it. Most organizations just don't want to cough up the money.

92. I never, ever get the feared blue screen at work
and the hourglass is no worse than that little spinning disk on the Mac.

As I said in my other post, I'm not saying one is better or worse than the other. It's all in what you're used to, and to each his/her own. That's why there are different kinds of cars and other products -- one kind doesn't always suit everyone. If everyone liked the same things, there would only be one kind of any product. There's room in the world for Windows and Mac users.

103. I had a Windows box in DC
and hated every minute of it. I have a Linux machine now and sometimes get tired of dealing with the lack of ready-to-go software for it (a lot of stuff has to be compiled for your particular machine; with Windows and Mac machines, you can usually download binary files), but it's a vast improvement over Windows and possibly better than having a Mac was. And all of it is better than Hollerith cards, which is what I started on (mumble mumble) years ago.

116. Hollerith cards are the punchcards they used to run through machines
for the mainframes. You used a modified typewriter to punch holes in the cards and each card represented a single statement of a computer program. If you were smart, you'd punch a sequence number in the far right hand column of the card so you'd know which line of the program it was which in case you dropped the deck. I once saw someone I dislike drop an unnumbered deck in a mudpuddle. Bliss. :-)

One of the reasons I'm unlikely to ever take more Vicodin that I strictly need is that the stuff is so constipating.

Prune juice helps but the sweetness is so vile. Hold your nose and drink it as cold as possible if you can't find the lime kool-aid. Mary drank a lot of lime kool-aid with Metamucil when she was in chemo.

When we were growing up, my dad always claimed that no matter what subject we started discussing at the beginning of supper, sooner or later we'd end up talking about shit, and he was usually right. :7

212. I finally saw that. Too, too funny.
Whoa, that lawyer from Connecticut was a little wired. Think she could be a KOEB auxiliary? I'm glad Keith made the point about stalking because I was thinking that calling the same radio show every single day could edge over into stalking territory. Wonder how long it'll be before somebody starts calling the Dan Patrick show to talk about Bill O' Reilly. Dan would probably tease Keith endlessly about it.

217. Yeah, the lawyer was a bit enthusiastic about her point for an average
guest. LOL, maybe she was trying to score a date with Keith. (Keith: "Sorry, honey, but you should know by now...I don't do Connecticut.") Anyway, I do think the stalking point was good to make, because I think a person who called up O'Reilly over and over again just to harass him could indeed get in trouble. But ONE phone call in which you mention Keith? Uh, no, I don't think so.

As for someone calling in to Dan's show to talk about Bill (positively, I assume you mean)? I think Dan and Keith would handle it the way they do just about everything else--with humor. And if the person sounded as if he were trying to make a serious point, Keith would probably interject and say "Look, I'm not saying you can't watch and listen to him if you want. I just happen to think he's an idiot, that's all. Your mileage may vary." And that would be an end of it, because Keith knows better than to drag on the argument longer than that. If someone brought up Bill's superior ratings, Keith would go back to his own "money demo" statistics and also point out that he never said O'Reilly doesn't have higher ratings, he just said that ratings are not necessarily proof of quality the way Fox seems to think they are, and that the Fox people are bullies when they use their ratings as a cudgel to imply their own network's superiority. Especially when they too have had so many shows with poor ratings--just as has every other network.

As we know, ratings are a really stupid way to try to prove that your show is good. They are a factor of a) how many people can get your signal in the first place and b) how many people are receptive or becoming receptive to what you have to offer if they can get your signal. That's the way Keith looks at them. That way, he can feel good when his ratings go up, and at the same time not feel too discouraged that he's still way behind Bill's. What it means is that maybe, just maybe, more people are not only getting access to his show, but more people are looking for someone who says what he has to say and the way he says it. And they are slowly, but surely, finding it.

And THAT is what's really got Bill's goat. Which only makes sense...given that goat is a common Middle Eastern meat that goes well with things like falafel.

One of the most eagerly anticipated debut albums of the year. Kool-Aid and Metamucil, from the upstart Midwesterners, Baby Seal Club, was recorded July 23-25, 2005 in the backyard during a beer and brat barbecue party and is sure to set your toes-a-tappin'.

they were actually getting their cable TV service from "O'ReillyCableVision Inc."

Funny how it all seemed to go wonky for all of them on the SAME night...and when they called the emergency service outage number, they got a recorded message saying "Your call is important to us. Unfortunately, all our operators are currently sexually harassing other customers. Please stay on the line. Our operators are standing by with loofahs to assist you. Please be patient. They are working with only one hand free."

171. I just can't imagine doing that.
Even if I were the only diner in the restaurant, it's so gross. I don't change the baby at the table at home, why do it there in a restaurant? Granted, in NYC, they might not have a car to change the baby in (and seriously, the trunk of a car is a great place to change a baby if it's not cold or rainy 'cause even the squirmiest toddler can't roll out of the trunk), but I've been in very few restrooms that didn't have changing tables and I had something in the diaper bag to spread on the changing table that I could always spread on the floor if there were no other options. I mean, jeez, ya gotta wash your hands, anyway. :eyes:

220. I don't remember whether the restaurant guy mentioned people changing
babies at tables, but I think Keith told his own story of having seen people change a baby at their table at that time.

It's incredible that people do this. Talking on the cell is rude enough, but changing the baby is rude plus a smell! (And, yes, the chance of spreading who knows what germs.) How many restaurants don't have changing tables in the bathrooms nowadays? Even in the men's room, because they're finally getting wise to the fact that yes, men do carry babies around on their own sometimes?

222. not only that
some of them now have "jump seats" in the handicapped stalls -- little plastic fold-down seats on the side of the the stall where you can strap in a toddler to give Mommy a chance to change a younger sibling or use the bathroom without Junior wandering around all over messing with things, crawling out, opening the door, etc. I first saw one in the New Orleans airport about six years ago. I usually just get Amy to stay in one place by playing the bellybutton game -- sort of a hide-and-seek where we flash our navels at each other at unpredictable intervals -- but it must sound pretty odd to other people in the bathroom, a little kid and a woman saying "bellybutton!" and laughing. ;-)

OMG, there was one year when it seemed like everyone in Houston had fleas. It was purely awful. This was years ago, before Mary divorced, and the situation grew dire. He treated the rugs, a Herculean chore, but then we needed to bathe all the cats. As I recall, I held and he washed and Mary tried to calm them down afterwards. Oy, but that was a nightmare.

221. I can well imagine.
I'm so glad they came up with stuff like Advantage and Frontline. It makes the flea problem so much easier to handle.

I lived in half a house once where the dogs who lived with the tenant below had fleas something terrible, and I ended up getting fleas as a result of being in the hallway they used as access to the backyard. I then transmitted the fleas to my strictly indoor cats, and we all three were miserable until I got some Frontline.

How did I get rid of my own fleas, and the ones in my bed? Not by putting the Frontline on myself (although that was a tempting idea). Nah, I just put it on the cats and let them have the run of my bedroom during the day. At that time I wasn't letting them in the bedroom as a rule, so the instant I opened the door, they of course ran in there like it was the greatest place in the world to be (after all, it was "the forbidden room"). They spent all day in there while I was gone at work--and of course, as a result, attracted the attention of every flea in the place. The fleas landed on them, and soon met their doom. Most efficient way to kill fleas that I ever saw: use your cats as roaming "flea bombs."

I put it in the side of the computer and it was too small to be read or even to register that anything was in there, so I couldn't eject it, and there was no emergency manual eject on my model. I ended up putting double-sided tape on a business card and gingerly getting it out.
