I'm still upset about a thread I saw yesterday about a stoning in Somalia. Horrible...a 13-year-old girl who had been raped was stoned to death.

That on its face is enough to upset you for a long time...but even worse was the reaction on DU.

What were most of the comments? "How horrible--what can we do to try to affect women's rights in Somalia? Is there some action we can take to try to stop this?" No.

Mostly, it was a lot of comments about how evil religion is, because it was religious rules that caused this girl to be stoned to death. So, we all should be atheists, because only people who believed in a "book of fairy tales" could conceive of doing such an evil thing. And it went on from there into the evils of FLDS and so on...a general condemnation of ALL religious beliefs of all kinds.

Sometimes, I get just as fucking sick of DU'ers pulling a muscle patting themselves on the back as I do of things like Somalians stoning rape victims to death.
