A Tale of Two Toilets

We remodeled about three years ago and have put up with a weak flushing one piece toilet. A nice old time design but a bust when it went to work. When the innards broke down, you had to call the manufacturer (a major brand) and have them send you one by mail. They weren't sold in hardware stores.

When the innards malfunctioned again recently, we decided to get a new toilet and chose the Eljer dual flush "Titan". They say it's quiet but I don't think so. It's noisier than our last. But it has a strong flush - the best.

I wonder if with it's elongated bowl that holds a lot of water, Eljer gets past the federal regulation. Maybe the tank has 1.6 gallons of water, but the Titan bowl holds more water than any of the low water toilets I've seen. Whatever they've done to the design, I recommend the Titan.

When we remodeled, we did two bathrooms. For one, we bought a dual flush Eljer that was a special sale at Home Depot. It was only $79. I should have gotten one for each bathroom at that time. I had no idea that dual flushes were pricey and that Eljer makes such a good product.

1. The water in the bowl is called 'the spot'.

In early low water toilets, they kept the same essential bowl design, but narrowed the outlet a bit to get more flow pressure. It worked ... sorta. And if you miss that spot under ... uh ... certain uses .... eeeew.

Second and third generation toilets redesigned the basic bowl. It is now shallower and that allows for a bigger spot. It also allows it to evacuate with more force, thereby more completely clearing the bowl.

It ain't rocket science, but it is just as beneficial to mankind. :)

2. Oh yes - the spot

Our "vintage look" but crummy toilet had that spot in a bad spot. No wonder they don't make the model now.
