I did a little self-assignment the Lake Lure Polar Plunge... not as cold as it has been in past years, but the water was no warmer

1. Here are my firsts
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=280x83314
Which are considerably better than the last. But then I wasn't loading wood when I shot these.

Love the action. Give it a sense of urgency... to get out of that cold water.

8. I love that drive through Iowa along 80
when the wind farm comes into sight! It's expanded quite a bit the last five years. Gives me hope for a sustainable future when I see them!

Also love the burrowed earth. That part of Iowa really is quite lovely.

13. got those shots travelin' 65 mph along 80
:-)

I would love to be able to photograph miles of wind farms all along the interstates... a good fantasy

I am in Denver right now and headed west over the Rockies... can't wait to see the photos waiting for me there...

14. Ah, if I'd known you were in Denver,
I'd have invited you out for a drink last night. :) Enjoy the ride along 70 but be careful snapping photos along Glenwood Canyon - it's beautiful but very winding and tricky taking photos going 70 mph. I know. I've tried. :D

17. smart advice...
more than one vehicle was overturned, in the ditch and/or involved in an accident... but lovely views (the drink would have been appreciated - after this treacherous drive!!)

18. I drove this stretch in the blizzard last week.
Totally, totally scary, with overturned cars everywhere. :scared: But I've seen coal trains jump track along the canyon more than once, too, usually because rocks have fallen on the tracks. That's the threat along 70 there in the nice weather.

Nice shot of the mountain. Where was that? Vail or Eagle, looks like. Where's robb when you need him? I think he lives out that way, he could probably tell us.

23. I like the wind farm one. On the one hand, the mechanical structures and
overall greyness of the scene makes it look industrial, but on the other hand, the fact that the turbines are facing in different directions adds a touch of humor to it.

6. Not my very first, but one of the first, taken at a New Years party.
I chopped the top off of Sheldon's head, but I love that smile. She's standing next to a Captain Morgan's sign, which gives the red glow.

And I'm sure Captain Morgan's would be happy to have her represent them at any time. :D

Though I think you're insane for partaking. Still, good photo so definitely worth your plunge.

Here's mine:

I thought for sure this amaryllis bulb was dead so I hadn't watered it for at least 6 months. So surprised to see it coming back up again! Reminds me that renewal happens even when it seems all has been lost. I hope it will be a theme in my life for the coming year.

But my favorite photo of the new year is of the exquisite ice patterns that formed on my glass patio table as the snow melted today. This was my fifth photo of the year.

22. It sure seems to be making an effort. I'd like to see what it looks like in
a few weeks. Love all the detail the ice captured too.

11. Starting small
Technically, this is my third shot... The first two were far too underexposed. I don't count this as my first "good" shot but it is the first "tolerable" shot. It's been said that when beginning something new, one should start small. It's the beginning of the year so, in terms of photos, I decided to start small. Very small.

12. Anchorage is melting
This is a reflection in a puddle on the sidewalk just outside my front door. Don't be alarmed -- we often get these warm Chinook winds this time of year, so it's not global warming run amok. I expect it to be back in the deep freeze next week.

15. Well - it's the second one I took this year
The first one, this morning, was of a vehicle I had just finished lettering. Then, realizing that I had wanted to post a "first" I turned around and took one of the tree behind me.

I suppose he would be Mister Old Year.
