1. Blood Red, Sister Rose

This book has everything to do with Joan of Arc, but from a perspective which outrages some
orthodox christians.

It's by Australian author Thomas Keneally, and I'm fortunate enough to possess a first edition copy,
given to me by my mother when it was first published. Keneally is a wonderful storyteller, and one
of my favourite Australian writers, both as a novelist and a playwright. "Schindler's Ark"
("Schindler's List" in the US) has rather overshadowed most of his earlier works these days, which
is a great pity, because while it was a fascinating story, it is by no means the only great book
he ever wrote.

"Blood Red, Sister Rose" tells Joan's story up until her capture by the Burgundians, and it weaves
some pagan rites and superstitions into the christian story, which is in perfect keeping with the
times, whether the Catholic Church would like to acknowledge that or not. It's a truly compelling
story, and I highly recommend it to anyone who can get hold of a copy.
