Does anyone know anything about Cláudio Cardinal Hummes from Brazil?
He's apparently on the short list, and he looks like the least "offensive" to me as a progressive Catholic - of the frontrunners.

What about the guy from Venice?

Sorry, I'm gonna be consumed by succession for the next month.

1. read this
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A22031-2005Apr2.html
He sounds like he would be a terrific Pope. a real friend of the working people. He's 70 so he's going to have a short to medium length term. And he's a "white" Brazilian which unfortunately is more palatable to the white man than a "black" or "brown" Pope.

And here are some more links on the other Popes. This is good discussion. I hope we get to discuss and learn about all the papabili here.

2. I like him too
He's probably the best of the ones I like that have a good chance. I really would like Daneels but Hummes would be good.

3. Does it matter how long someone has been an archbishop..
or Cardinal, in terms of candidacy?

6. No - the Pope can in theory be chosen from anywhere,
he doesn't have to be a cardinal, or even an archbishop.

It's just become accepted that he will be chosen from among the
cardinals, but length of service doesn't matter.

8. The only actual requirements are ...
1. male
2. Catholic

He doesn't even actually *need* to be a priest!

5. It would be great to have a Franciscan!
Although his stance on birth control is almost a deal killer for me. Still, it could be a lot worse.

7. All the cardinals appointed by John Paul
had to have made public statements against birth control, married
clergy, the ordination of women, etc. In fact, to be made a bishop
the same rules applied.

It follows then that any prelate who wanted to get ahead had to
become an echo chamber for John Paul, so it's hard to know how many
toed the line just to get on, and how many really believed what they
had to say.
