Kerry meets with Mass. delegation to get ‘supercommittee’ input

By Glen Johnson GLOBE STAFF SEPTEMBER 21, 2011

Senator John Kerry met this morning with members of the state’s congressional delegation so the Massachusetts Democrat could hear their ideas while he serves on a “supercommittee” aiming to cut $1.5 trillion from the federal budget deficit.

Kerry has already solicited input from Massachusetts residents. They can go online and post their ideas at www.kerry.senate.gov/feedback.

A spokeswoman said the senator also wanted input from his homestate colleagues, all of whom serve on various congressional committees with different perspectives on how to cut the deficit.

The group - which include Senator Scott Brown and Representatives Edward J. Markey, John Olver, John Tierney, Jim McGovern, Niki Tsongas, and William Keating - met at Kerry’s home in Washington’s Georgetown neighborhood. They spoke over Dunkin’ Donuts coffee and doughnuts, said one congressional aide.

“They also discussed Massachusetts industries and what effect different scenarios would have on them,” said the aide, who requested anonymity to discuss the private meeting.
