First Circuit Appeals court

Judge Sandra Lynch is set to become the ninth chief judge of the First Circuit Court of Appeals since Congress created the position in 1948, and will be the first woman to hold the post. Lynch will succeed Chief Judge Michael Boudin on June 16, according to the office of the circuit executive.

As chief judge, Judge Lynch will serve as executive officer of both the First Circuit Court of Appeals and the Judicial Council of the First Circuit. She will also represent the First Circuit in biannual meetings of the Judicial Conference of the U.S., the judiciary's national policy making body.

Judge Lynch has served for 13 years on the First Circuit Court of Appeals and is the first and only woman judge on that court. She was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the court on May 1, 1995, on the recommendations of Senators Edward M. Kennedy and John Kerry.

Boudin will remain on the court in regular, active service.
