Kerry testifies at Global Climate Change hearing 1/30
Edited on Tue Jan-30-07 09:29 AM by TayTay
The full Committee on Environment and Public Works will conduct a hearing entitled, "Senators' Perspectives on Global Warming." The purpose of the hearing is to hear from each Senator about his or her views on global warming, and what the Senator believes the nation's response should be to the issue.

From a Dow Jones article:

Instead of bringing in a panel of economists and environmentalists for the
9:00 a.m. hearing, committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer,D-Calif., will hear from
her fellow senators. It's all part of Boxer's effort to craft a consensus
climate change bill that can pass the Senate.

"This is a very important first step and she's very eager to take the
temperature of her colleagues," a committee spokesman said Monday. "We're
expecting a very good turnout."

Sens. John McCain,R-Ariz., and Barack Obama,D-Ill. - who are widely seen as
presidential candidates in 2008 - are expected to participate.

McCain and Obama recently introduced the Climate Stewardship Act of 2007 along
with Sen. Joe Lieberman,I-Conn. Under the proposal, companies would have to
reduce their emissions to 2004 levels in 2012, then gradually reduce emissions
by about 2% a year through 2020.

Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Jeff Bingaman,D-N.M.,
is also expected to present his view on climate policy as are Sens. Dianne
Feinstein,D-Calif., John Kerry,D-Mass., Carl Levin,D-Mich., Lisa
Murkowski,R-Alaska, and Dick Durbin,D-Ill.

3. Yep, Inhofe --> Boxer
that says a LOT! Things are very far from perfect, as we know so well, but hey, they could be so much worse!

No mistaking the back of that head. (Ah, he is distinctive.)

Anyway, he will be testifying this morning, probably around 11:00 am.

Gee, did you know the good Senator had a book coming out soon on environmental issues? LOL! Nice witness to have. Also, smaht witness.

mentioned his book, says the global warning is the scariest thing he has read other than a few security memos. Mention that Jim Hansen says the ice caps will melt likely in 30 years - it's not an if.

Kerry says science accepted, but the urgency isn't. Need to cap the carbon - cap and trade program. Snowe and he will introduce. Says technology will help - need to make committment

Energy efficency - for profit.

Stern report 1% of GDP to do it. Costs will be more not to. If we do it, we get better economy, better health, better environment, savings, job, nation security.

Boxer - "gave the overview I agree with. It is the "conservative" thing to do. (She sounded extremely impressed.)

Kerry only 10 year window. Grab biggest pieces first.

Boxer: work together in the commerce committee on this too. Says Kerry has been a leader on this for years.

We need this transcript - Kerry was fantastic. I hope the powers that be are happy - I can see why Kerry wanted to wait on a decision till April, but it's clear he should be a key player on this now. This might also be why he made the choice he did.

That book is likely to be incredible - it seems that it will complement Gore's. He sold the general public on global warming. Kerry on global warming seems to be more on what can be done. (He also covers toxins etc.

Go hear what Sen. Tom Carper from Deleware said about John Kerry in the intro to his appearance at this hearing.

Just go hear it. It's about 2:50 into the hearing. The archived webcast is up.

Where were these words in 2004?
