Accused school board faker faces calls for job

LAWRENCE, Mass. — Veterans and city residents are calling on a new member of the school board to resign amid allegations he faked his military record.

Jim Stokes was arrested Wednesday for allegedly forging a military discharge document that said he was the recipient of numerous medals.

Stokes had claimed to be a Marine Corps veteran during his campaign last fall.

Stokes said he planned to continue serving on the board, but he did not attend a board meeting Thursday.

That didn’t stop residents from demanding that he step down. Daniel Hanneken, a local school principal and Air Force veteran, said Stokes can’t be trusted.
