Black boots are back — at least for a while — if you have a dirty job and your commander’s permission.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz has given the go-ahead for airmen to wear black boots with their airman battle uniform while the service tries to field a stain-resistant version of the sage-green suede ABU boot.

Schwartz left it to the major commands to make the final call on black boots — setting rules for when and where they can be worn with the ABU.

Airmen who want to wear black boots with the ABU should check with their squadron leaders to see if they qualify and to find out the rules, said Maj. Rosalie Duarte, who coordinates uniform policies at the Air Staff.

Schwartz, in a message dated in February, made it clear black boots with the ABU can be worn only in “industrial areas,” which can include flight lines, hangars and kitchens.
