VENTURA, Calif. — An ex-Navy Seabee has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for the Camarillo ambush shooting of a man locked in a bitter child custody battle with a fellow sailor.

John Marmo Jr. was shot to death in 2006 outside his home.

A jury last month convicted Marmo’s ex-wife former Construction Mechanic 2nd Class Rebecca Braswell and co-defendant former construction mechanic Matthew Toerner of murder and conspiracy and the special allegation of lying in wait. They face life in prison when sentenced April 8.

Former Construction Mechanic 3rd Class Shannon Butler, described by a prosecutor as the chief recruiter in the murder-for-hire case, entered a guilty plea Monday to first-degree murder. She will be sentenced May 4 to 25 years to life in prison.

The defendants were sailors stationed at the Navy Construction Battalion Center in Port Hueneme.
