USS Harpers Ferry sailor sentenced to 18 months

A sailor convicted of sexual assault was sentenced Friday to 18 months of confinement plus two months of hard labor at a general court-martial on Yokosuka Naval Base.

Seaman Christopher Gregory, 21, formerly assigned to the USS Harpers Ferry at Sasebo Naval Base, was found guilty Thursday after a trial that began Monday, according to Sasebo Naval Base spokesman Chuck Howard.

The charges stem from an assault on a Navy spouse in the city of Sasebo in June.

Gregory was arrested after a daylong, citywide manhunt that included a mandatory muster for all base personnel after a report by the wife of a sailor that she was knocked to the ground and assaulted while walking downtown the night of June 27.

A passer-by found the woman lying on a sidewalk near Sasebo General Hospital at 3:39 a.m.
