2 sailors sentenced for ship-board child porn

Two former sailors were sentenced to prison Wednesday for possessing child pornography on their ships.

A federal judge in Jacksonville, Fla., sentenced former Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 3rd Class Matthew S. Orth, 22, to six years in prison for storing the illegal images on his own computer and the server of the carrier Theodore Roosevelt. He pleaded guilty in October to two charges, transportation of child pornography and possession of obscene materials.

Orth was arrested in August after the ship’s technology staff, conducting routine maintenance of the Roosevelt’s computer systems, found an obscene cartoon of two children having sex hidden in a computer file protected by Orth’s password, according to Steve Cole, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office for Florida’s Middle District.

They notified the ship’s command. Investigators later seized Orth’s laptop and found hundreds of illegal photos and several child pornography videos, Cole said.

Orth, of Clearlake, Calif., enlisted in June 2004 and was discharged in December while his case was still pending in federal court. The judge also ordered him to register as a sex offender.
