Jones looks to help U.S. regain footing

Retired Marine Gen. James Jones accepted President-elect Barack Obama’s offer to become national security adviser because the U.S. has an opportunity to “regain its footing” as a globally inspiring world power, he said.

Jones, the 32nd Marine Corps commandant from July 1999 to January 2003 and then Supreme Allied Commander Europe until he retired from active duty in early 2007, said the “historic” nature of the election made it an easy offer to accept.

“So many millions and millions of people still think and still believe in the power and vision that America — and America perhaps alone — can give to the expectations and hopes of families and people all over the world, regardless of race, religion or color,” Jones told an audience at the Marine Corps Association’s Ground Awards Dinner in Arlington, Va., on Dec. 4.

“I think that’s a wonderful thing, and I think the American uniform is going to play a very important role in helping this country choose the right path at a very important crossroads in our history.”

Jones’ comments came three days after he was announced as Obama’s choice for national security adviser. Jones agreed to speak at the event weeks before Obama’s choices were announced, event organizers said.
