PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh will soon be getting a $5 million facility to house families of veterans while they are being treated in the city’s VA hospital.

Until now, when veterans were treated in the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, relatives had to stay in hotels or find some other accommodations.

But the nonprofit Fisher House Foundation will build a so-called comfort house in Pittsburgh. The foundation has built similar facilities in 38 other military bases and VA centers nationwide.

The Pittsburgh facility will be built with funds from the foundation, the federal government and local donations. A Fisher spokesman, Jim Weiskopf, says the Pittsburgh house will be able to accommodate 42 families and should open by next year.

uhc comment: The article is written to imply that families are already housed. The housing is not available until next year. Way to go, Associated Press.
