Daughter of U.S. servicemembers found dead near Aviano Air Base

European edition, Saturday, January 26, 2008

The 13-month-old daughter of two U.S. servicemembers was found dead Thursday morning at their home east of Aviano Air Base, Italy, according to numerous Italian news reports.

The parents called Italian emergency crews around 6 a.m., reporting their infant had stopped breathing, according to a report by Corriere della Sera, a Milan-based newspaper. Emergency crews responded and tried to revive the infant, but were unable to do so.

Italian fire department personnel also responded and ruled out a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning, the report said. There were reportedly no signs of violence and the child appeared to have suffocated. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

Second Lt. Kim Schaerdel, a public affairs officer for the 31st Fighter Wing, said Italian authorities have jurisdiction and are investigating the case. She confirmed that both parents are active-duty Air Force personnel and said the family lived in one of the small government-leased housing communities surrounding the base.
