So, we finally went "total homeschool: "...
we had been in a two-days-per-week program, in which she spent the two days in the classroom with the educational specialists teaching. That worked for the second part of 4th, and the first part of 5th. The first part of 5th went fine, but, at times, was dicey. A new director came in, replacing the fun 'hippie' director, and put in strict attendance and other policies, in addition to a curriculum that was, basically, kind of a secularized Conservative Christian program. When my kid spent precious time researching Moses and the Ten Commandments, in addition to the Dead Sea Scrolls, that was it for me (the "value of the month" was "obedience").

I sat down and talked with the family, and we decided to "do total homeschooling." We are doing it through another local charter school. I'll be meeting with an educational specialist once per month, and discussing her progress (and co-deciding 'grades,' if you will), but I'll get to pick the curriculum and the assignments (with appropriate guidance). I think that we'll be happy. Just in case she ever wants to go back to class (and she will have to effective in high school), there are classes to take through the school (and you can add them one by one).

We're much happier.

1. yay! Good for you.
Everyone has to do what is right for their child.

Are you hooked up with any hs groups in your area?

2. Hi!

Yes, I am; but most of the homeschoolers in my area are Conservative Christians.

I'm still looking to find some homeschooling friends that are progressives; I have faith that I will.

Plus, we are still going to meet her friends from her old school once per month on 'field trips.'

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Thanks for your support.

3. Glad you found something that works for your student!
I am an Education Specialist in the Los Angeles area. Just curious where you are. Anyway, the overwhelming majority of my families are secular liberals, so if you are in my area and are looking for some HS support groups, feel free to PM me!

4. Thanks, Ma'am.
I'm sorry to be so late replying.

I'm down in the Murrieta/Temecula area (about 1 hour north of San Diego - inland).

We just started a weekly get-together group. It's working fine.
