Hilary Swank: "Boxers have injuries and they keep pushing through it"
The Oscar winner for Best Portrayal of a Corpse actually said this, on national TV, without so much as batting an eyelash:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/03/02/60II/main677647.shtml

Swank bulked up by 19 pounds and learned to box like a pro. Everyone back at Gleason's was impressed. But she kept a secret from the boxers, and from the filmmakers who hired her.

She had a potentially life-threatening staphylococcus infection. "I got a blister the size of my palm on the ball of my foot," says Swank.

Within 48 hours, the blister was infected, and staph bacteria spread through her veins. "There were streaks going up my foot," recalls Swank. "So, I went to the doctor that second, and he looked at me, and he said, 'This is really serious. And if you had waited two more hours, you would have been in the hospital for three weeks. And if it gets to your heart, that's it.'"

She didn't tell Eastwood what had happened. "I didn't tell Clint, because in the end, that's what happens to boxers," says Swank. "They get blisters, they get infected. They have injuries and they keep pushing through it."

This from a woman who just won an Academy Award for her portrayal of -- a boxer who didn't push through it, but instead begged to be killed. I just smacked my palm against my forehead when I heard it. "I can't believe I just heard that!"

3. It was the story of ONE boxer.
People need to learn how to think for themselves. It's just a goddamn movie.

5. I wonder
if any of these people who are so quick to fawn over MDB have bothered to read the disability critiques of the film on sites like Ragged Edge and Not Dead Yet?

6. Exactly.
I haven't seen it yet, but I do know that the "care" provided in the movie was so different from "top quality care" in real life that when my personal assistant saw it she couldn't stop laughing, which probably wasn't the intended effect. She said she was supposedly in a rehab hospital but wasn't getting any rehab. Moreover, a lot of what was happening to the character was apparently physiologically impossible and a lot of what was portrayed as the character's "needs" were not at all in line with what reality would have been (nor was the acting particularly good -- she apparently talked totally normally even on a vent). She saw it with someone else who works as a personal assistant, and their reaction was laughter because it really was that ridiculous. I guess most non-disabled people with no contact with quads wouldn't see these enormous forays into unrealism and would actually view this as realistic and buy into the conclusions. This apparently went way beyond artistic license.

Whenever I decide to go see it, I'm going to follow Not Dead Yet's advice and say "Bullshit!" at appropriate moments. The film was apparently full of said bullshit.

7. WELL SAID BAN!!!!!
:toast:

The non disabled population (perhaps a few "in denial" disabled as well) don't have A CLUE as to what you're talking about. "It's just a movie"... Yeah right! It's only EASTWOOD's rendition of what happens in the minds of the average quad/MS/paraplegic/hemiplegic/stroke victim etc etc.. NOT!! Maybe Eastwood should have made the movie with Reeves before he died...I wonder how HE would have felt about the plot line.

And we all know that Eastwood is such an avid advocate of the Disabled don't we!! :eyes:
