This nuclear reactor thing in Japan
is scaring the hell out of me. If it can't be cooled, and it blows...

Sending cooling vibrations to the reactor core,
cooling vibrations to Mother Earth's plates

5. according to al Jazeera, 5 are now in a state of emergency
they're doing a controlled release of steam to relieve pressure in one of them. According to Reuters, they are within hours of a meltdown.

that was the one planet we didn't talk about, Neptune, Goddess of the Sea, about to enter its home of Pisces, ruler of the oceans

how sad

11. What are the effects of Neptune entering Pisces, Rick? If the events of
yesterday are any indicator, we may be in for a very bumpy ride.

16. I will write much about it
It is possibly the most powerful planet there is going home where it hasn't been in about 175 years.
Neptune is spirit; this will great for Lightwork

It's darkside is escape, alcohol, drug, deception and being unrealistic

we have to make it our rise and conquering over the corporate world, I think.

It posts great spiritual challenges and losses (floods) if people or countries ignore the golden rule, basically

18. As far as I have read, most every 'religion' has a form of the Golden Rule.
It is so simple and basic, yet so seemingly impossible for too many to wrap their brains and hearts around.

I look forward to your interpretation of Neptune's return home, soon please. :)

8. This is scary.

I hope they can get these under control. Someone had a good explanation of why this won't be another Cherynobel earlier on DU, which relieved my mind somewhat. I checked my email not too long ago and found out my cousin is in Tokyo. He's coming home tonight, thankfully, but had to walk up 23 flights of stairs to get back to his hotel. I'm hoping for the people who can't leave that the nuclear plants can be contained with as little damage as possible, and then there's all the aftershocks. I found out about this before work, around 5:30 am this morning when my mom called. I always jump when it rings from Ohio because she has terminal cancer and could go at anytime, then I realized it was from her cell. Bless her heart, she was worried about my sister and I because we're on the West Coast.

9. well, now reactor one has blown
People being told to stay indoors, don't drink tap water and don't run a/c. Other than that they're downplaying. Not officially calling it a meltdown, although some reports say meltdown is underway. They're also sticking with the radioactivity at 1000 times normal (still very low compared to what officially damages). Someone on gd says what is released will circle earth in 10 days. Not sure what direction the winds are blowing in -- one report said slight wind headed northeast.

12. It's not yet clear what exploded
At least by the news reports we are getting. Most seem to say that the core reactor is still intact but working towards meltdown. One expert mentioned that they're getting ready to pump seawater through as coolant, which definitely means they never expect the reactor to function again. At this point evacuating everyone in a 20km radius is simply prudent; if/when the thing blows you want as few civilians around as possible.

So bottom line: it's not quite as bad as it seems, but we're not out of the woods yet.

13. phew, the steel reactor container itself is still intact
Edited on Sat Mar-12-11 09:13 AM by northernlights
The outer concrete containment building blew up -- hydrogen explosion from the steam release hitting water.

They are now filling the reactor with seawater to cool it down. They expect it to take 5-10 hours to do that and up to 10 days to "finish the process." Something about using boric acid to prevent some critical event.

The other 4 reactors are under control and no longer in a state of emergency.

They also are distributing iodine tablets to people in the vicinity. Which kind of contradicts the "no radiation escaped." Maybe the seawater operation is probably another big risk....

15. My cousin is stuck in Tokyo.
He was supposed to fly out yesterday, but it took him 10 hours to get to the airport, and he missed his flight. He has to wait maybe a few days for the next one. In the meantime, the people stuck at the airport have no food at all. Then there's the reactor situation. I don't think we're being told everything about this, but what we're hearing is bad enough. I can send all the good vibes I can muster, but even so, feel completely helpless. :(

19. and now reactor #3 is likely in meltdown
That is the one that lost it's cooling yesterday.

Just keep its primary steel container intact. If that goes, then there will be a major release of radiation. As long as that holds, there will be ongoing releases of low levels in steam as they reduce the pressure....

23. it just keeps getting worse and worse...
An explosion in the #2 reactor was near the containment vessel and damaged it, so radiation is certainly leaking. The radiation spiked so high that most of the workers were sent away. 50 have remained behind fighting to stop the meltdown.

The government has admitted that all 3 are in meltdown.

Gamma radiation has been detected at 30x normal some distance from the plant. Still not horribly high, but clearly they haven't been forthcoming about leakage.

The wind has shifted so that anything that happens will blow over Japan. I guess Tokyo is about 150 miles from there?

But it's worse than that. A Vermont nuclear engineer works at a facility with the identical design. In an interview with WaPo, he explained that the radioactive spent storage rods -- about 20 years worth -- are stored in pools directly above the reactors. (Remember -- the reactors that had their roofs blown off?) The government has yet to account for those spent storage rods. If the reactors cooling systems have failed, then the storage pool coolants have failed as well. He said that without cooling, the water would evaporate and expose the spent rods within 24 hours, and they will heat up and can sponstaneously combust...especially the plutonium ones (reactor 3 has plutonium mixed with u235) which burn hotter.

In his words, this has the potential to be "Chernobyl on steroids."

I feel absolutely sick. I cannot watch and cannot look away...
