people are jerks or why i am getting a new bird.
i have kinda had my feelers of for a bird. i have a grey that is pretty quiet and a little bored. i used to have a lory that was her enemy, which to a parrot is almost as good as having a friend. better than having no one but these naked pink things to talk to.
so, i have a friend who used to have a pet shop and still keeps in touch with a lot of the birds she raised. this black cap lory has the misfortune of having a good mom, but an asshole dad. then she made the mistake of biting the teenage ass. the kids deserved it, but no one cares. this gave the guy a reason to terrorize the wife by telling her she had to get rid of the bird. she has been trying to resist, so the guy has started threatening to kill the bird with his bare hands if it doesn't go.
so, i am adopting the bird. unfortunately, i cannot also adopt the wife and kid. :wtf: is wrong with people.

That sounds like one f'ed-up guy. I'm glad you get to give the bird a better home, at least! :toast:

2. yeah, poor baby
my friend says that she started out as a hilarious little clown. now she barely moves, and has to be coaxed out of her cage. rich suburban a-holes.
they bang on her cage if she makes noise. they scream at her. they keep her locked up for days on end. i just hope i can keep her from becoming a plucker. she is starting to do it a little, and it is something that i have a real problem with.
did i say she was a black capped lory?- like this one

one of the prettiest lories.

3. Wow!
What a beautiful bird...the colors seem too vivid to be real. She's lucky she's getting a new mom.

When I was little my sister wanted a parakeet, so we got one from a pet store (we've always had rescued dogs, so you'd think we'd know better). We took good care of him, but nobody knew how to provide for a parakeet emotionally, and he was afraid of us the whole time, just sat in his cage alone and chirped to himself. We found him one morning dead on the floor of his cage and never found out what killed him. Then we got two more, because we felt like they would want company. They ate from my hand (but no one else's) eventually, but they never were brave enough to leave the cage, so they probably never got to fly even once. They both died within a week of one another - none of them ever seemed sick; maybe they just had heart attacks or something. I still feel terrible about the lives those birds had with us. We didn't know any better, but I doubt that made much difference to them.

Once I have my own place, I'd love to have a couple of rescued birds, now that I know a lot more about them. Maybe it could help repair my karma. Anyway, sorry about that long story, but I think that's why I always feel really good when I hear about a bird getting to go to a great home.

4. Just goes to show that we ARE all interconnected
and that animals, birds, creatures of all kind pick up on our vibes and energies -- meaning if we don't interact with them in positive ways, they become fearful and become ill, and die sooner. It always amazes me when people say, oh it's just an animal, like makes no matter how you treat it -- whether it is a dog, cat or even a bird or a perhaps a turtle, they have no feelings.

Positive energy is positive energy right? Don't worry, your karma will be righted. I had some bad animal experiences as a child and they have been turned 180.

Peace, 48%er

5. almost all the animal lover i know have a story like that
mine involves a pair of turtles that were forgotten for over a week. when i remembered them, they were not only dead, but their eyes had already desiccated. those little hollow eye sockets still pop up in my dreams. (i'm 50)

your birdies most likely had liver disease. a bird seed diet, and no exercise usually cause that. birds hide illness as a survival strategy. the flock will chase off a sick bird, so they hide it from their own flock as well as predators. they are very good at it, and it takes a trained eye to pick it out. but, fwiw, until the last 10-15 years, very little was known about proper avian care, and avian vets were as rare as ivory billed woodpeckers.

6. ps- lories
are by far the prettiest of all cage birds, imho. some of the macaws can maybe compete, but the variety and iridescence are amazing. they don't make a lot better pets than caws, tho. the big problem with lories is that they eat a primarily fruit and liquid diet, so they have extremely liquid poops. and they can squirt them a couple of feet.
i resisted getting another lory for that reason. but i do love them, they are great clowns. and sophie needs a home.

7. That bird is very lucky to get a new home with you.
It may take time, but perhaps she will lose her fear and get back to being the bird she should be. I know what you mean about wtf is wrong with people. I get so upset when I hear stories like that. Sounds like that husband should be the one to go.

9. Nothing is wrong with good people like you.
Thank goodness there are people like you out there to offer a good home. :)

What I've learned is that birds are FAIR, they give out warnings and if you overstep, then ouch. :( (thankfully I haven't learned this by being biten by my own bird)

I would fear for the wife and kid as the guy sounds like he has quite the temper, threatening to kill a poor bird?

10. sophie will be here soon.
the mom kinda waffled a little, not wanting to let go of the bird. i don't blame her, but the poor thing is getting picked on daily.
but my friend will be picking her up in the next few days. i will post some pics as soon as she gets here.
my son is so excited. he is 14, and the lory that we used to have was his pet. when we were discussing where to put the cage he said "it doesn't matter where we put the cage, cuz she is gonna be with me, wherever i am, all the time."

12. Good to hear the bird will have a good home now
Animal abuse and domestic abuse go hand in hand and your story illustrates the point very well. I hope things get better for your friend, she deserves better.
