Need your suggestions please
sick geriatric dog + carpet = odor

I initially cleaned with Nature's Miracle. Didn't work.

Then I brought out the carpet cleaner with the pet soil and odor remover shampoo and pre-treatment. Used a black light to make sure I wasn't leaving any spots untreated. Carpet looks good but the odor remains.

Next I mixed the vet recommended OdoBan in the carpet cleaner and, again, cleaned the carpet. Helped some but odor remains.

Next step is to use the carpet cleaner with a white vinegar solution. And I may try the OdoBan again because it did seem to help a little bit.

The carpet was soiled with a bit of vomit, some diarrhea, and some dog pee. It is the urine odor that lingers. This is not a problem I've had to deal with before.

Need some help here from the collective wisdom of DU dog and animal lovers. Any suggestions as to how to resolve this problem?

Doggie has been to the vet and is doing much better now.

1. I've used Woolite Oxydizing Pet Stain cleaner with some success
Geriatric Cat Diarrhea is particularly nasty smelling. However, it does not soak, so there is a difference in what is going on.
If the urine soaked into the pad, the carpet needs to be pulled up and the pad treated or "patched" (The soaked area removed and another piece of pad put in place) Also, check to make sure that the floor underneath does not have the odor. If you have a wood floor under the pad, you may need to sand down the floor under the stain and re-varnish. My aunt and uncle needed to do that when they bought their second home; the previous owners had a tomcat.
Good luck.

4. I will add that to my list
of things to try

This hasn't been a big problem and most of the stuff was treated while fresh.

I'm finding this remarkably frustrating. A young niece spilled milk on the carpet which left a sour smell - and that was far easier to clean and remove the odor.

Thanks!

2. when they get older
sometimes they have trouble holding it.

You might consider (if its affordable) pulling up the carpet and
getting floors treated with polyeurathane.

6. I would LOVE
to completely take out the carpet and have new floors. That means refinishing in part of the house and replacing in part of the house.

Unfortunately there's some other stuff that needs to be done first - and like most folks these days money is a little tight right now.

3. Glad your dog's feeling better.
:)

I lost my poodle last year. He had diabetes and sometimes, he had trouble holding his urine, so he had many accidents. Now I have a new puppy and he had accidents when we first got him, so I had to deal with the urine smell all over again. I tried everything, but the product that works the best for me is Stainaway from Drs. Foster & Smith.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3521

It comes in a 16oz spray bottle and a 64oz bottle that can be used in your carpet cleaner (or to refill the spray bottle). I even use it when I spill something on the rug because it takes the stain up immediately.

8. There are two dogs here
The younger has renal disease and was a CRF dog at 5 months of age (he's nearly 7 now). He usually does very well holding his urine but there is the occasional accident. He also has allergies - and hairballs!

The older dog is a hypothyroid dog. He has not yet been diagnosed with Cushing's or diabetes but I fear that one of those diagnoses awaits in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the suggestion. It surely is one of experience.

Enjoy that puppy!

5. Bissell makes a good on for their green machine
It's specifically for pet stains, and it took the smell of cat urine out of my carpet.

7. Is it the one in a red bottle?
Edited on Mon Feb-09-09 05:05 PM by Coyote_Bandit
If so, I've tried it.

However, someone off this board has suggested that I need to use one of the pet odor products and then temporarily cover the affected area with SaranWrap so that it doesn't dry too quickly and the enzymes have a better opportunity to work. Seems to make sense.

Thanks!

10. It's in a white bottle with green printing on it
Sorry, I can't quite remember what it's called -- it's been a while since I've needed to use it. I had a geriatric cat who couldn't hold it sometimes.

The saran wrap thing sounds like it'll work.

Good luck.

9. With the Nature's Miracle, you have to let it soak in
As in drench the area and let it dry naturally. It has to get down as far as the original stain/odor did.

11. Equal parts vinegar and water or equal salt, vinegar & borax.
If you use the second recipe, rub the paste onto the carpet for a few hours and then vacuum.

I've also used baking soda as an odor remover - just sprinkle on carpet, let it sit and vacuum.

Hopefully one of these will do the trick!

15. And you don't have to worry about toxic residue!
Hope one of those helps (or maybe a combination of more than one)!

13. Plain old cheap hydrogen peroxide
50 cent a bottle.

Pour on stain, cover with towel, step on it, let dry. Peroxide kills the germs that cause the odor. It won't fade the carpet and it will remove the stain too.

14. Hydrogen peroxide won't fade the carpet?
I just may have to test that on the carpet somewhere in a corner of a closet.

I don't doubt that it will kill the germs but I have a hard time believing that the stuff that bleaches hair will not affect the dark color of my carpet.

Thanks for the idea. Now I'm curious about something other than dog odor.

16. Once it dries, there is no fading, I swear.....

One of my old dogs had diabetes insipidus - major water drinking/peeing. He couldn't make it outside all the time.

I used peroxide on the spots, and my carpet is a deep sea blue/green wool. No damage, no spots, no odor. The strength peroxide sold in drug stores is strong enough to kill bacteria, but not strong enough to bleach fibers.

My mom's old country vet told her about peroxide. It works, it's safe. I even used it on a persian (expensive!) rug and there was no damage or fading when we got a puppy after the old dog was gone.

Go ahead and try it on an inconspicuous spot. Pour it on, put a white towel over it, step on it, remove the towel and let it dry. Vacuum the nap up and you'll see nothing. :)
